The 10th African Women Writers’ Symposium (AWWS) continues on the 26 October in Newtown (Johannesburg) at the Market Square. The last weekend saw the launch of a very successful African Women Writers Symposium at the packed to capacity, Soweto Theatre. Prof Carolyn Cooper from Jamaica delivered the in Memoriam lecture for Nadine Gordimer entitled ‘All My Weapons Are Within Me ‘ Literature and Popular Culture as Sites of Female Empowerment in Jamaica. Saturday 26 October 2024 at the Auditorium (Market Photo Workshop, at the Market Square, Newtown) All talks from 12 midday will be livestreamed.
On Saturday 26 October, AWWS will feature various literary international and local panel discussions on contemporary issues as well as master class workshops on poetry, and publishing. Some of the highlights to look out for include a panel discussion with award winning hip hop poet, Toni Blackman from New York, Gigi Lamayne and Eavesdrop from South Africa. The panel looks at the role of women, lyrics and influence, controversies in popular music including amapiano, hip hop.Award winning women authors feature in a panel entitled, Taking Womens Fiction Seriously with Fiona Snyckers, Zukiswa Wanner, Angela Makhlowa, Sue Nyathi facilitated by Karabo Kgoleng.
The symposium will also feature a panel looking at borders , indigenous language and issues around home and belonging with award winning author Slyvia Vollenhoven, Lorato Trok and Dr Frank Meintjies.
The symposium also includes a thought-provoking panel called Narrating Palestine. Looking at the mainstream media and its reporting on Palestine. Prominent media practitioners will join the panel, including Phathiswa Magopeni (former head of SABC News and currently a board member of the public broadcaster), Qaanitah Hunter (award winning political journalist, editor and media industry leader in South Africa), and Youmna ElSayed. Egyptian-Palestinian journalist. Youmna ElSayed was the Gaza Strip correspondent for Al Jazeera English for many years. This will be facilitated by media activist Hassen Lorgat.
