JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, wellness advocates and residents from across Gauteng are expected to gather at Randburg Cricket Club on Saturday, 20 June 2026, as Johannesburg hosts one of Africa's largest International Day of Yoga celebrations featuring free wellness experiences, health screenings and activations open to the public at no charge.
Led by the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg, the event forms part of a global movement endorsed by the United Nations and observed annually in more than 190 countries worldwide.
Since the United Nations designated 21 June as International Day of Yoga in 2014, the practice has grown from an ancient Indian tradition into a global wellness movement embraced by millions seeking healthier, more balanced lives. Across South Africa, yoga continues to gain ground in schools, universities, businesses, healthcare settings and communities looking for practical tools to manage stress, improve physical health and strengthen mental resilience.
This year's theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ speaks directly to the value of lifelong wellness. At a time when communities around the world are seeking sustainable approaches to health across all stages of life, yoga offers an accessible and proven pathway to physical vitality, mental well-being and community connection.
Over the past decade, Johannesburg's International Day of Yoga celebration has grown into one of the continent's most significant public wellness gatherings, drawing South Africans from all cultures, faiths, ages and backgrounds in a shared commitment to health, mindfulness and social cohesion.
"Yoga belongs to humanity. It transcends borders, cultures and languages, and reminds us that individual well-being and collective well-being are deeply connected. We invite all South Africans to join us in this celebration."
— HE Senkuttvan Korenthan, Consul General of India, Johannesburg
The 2026 celebration at the iconic Randburg Cricket Club will feature a mass yoga session led by experienced instructors, guided breathing and mindfulness exercises, wellness activations, cultural showcases and the opportunity for participants to experience first-hand the transformative benefits of yoga practice.
The 2026 celebration also marks a milestone under the leadership of Acting Consul General Harish Kumar, who has reaffirmed the Consulate's commitment to strengthening wellness, cultural diplomacy and people-to-people engagement between India and South Africa.
