Calling All Authors: DSAC Publishing Hub's 2023/24 Call for Manuscripts Now Open

The stage is set for a literary revolution as the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) in partnership with Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association of South Africa (ANFASA) to unveil the eagerly awaited 2023/24 Call for Manuscripts. This momentous announcement marks the vibrant kick-off of the DSAC Publishing Hub initiative, igniting the spark that will illuminate untold stories, celebrate the South African heritage, and empower authors across South Africa.

The DSAC Publishing Hub main purpose is to develop and promote South African literature by supporting authors and revitalizing the publishing industry. As part of this commitment, proficient and passionate authors are invited to submit their manuscripts for consideration. This is a remarkable opportunity for authors to share their unique perspectives, contribute to the literary tapestry of the nation, and take part in shaping the South African literature.

Embracing the Essence of Transformation

At the heart of the DSAC Publishing Hub lies a commitment to amplify South African literature by nurturing authors and reinvigorating the publishing landscape. As part of this commitment, we extend a warm invitation to proficient and passionate authors to contribute their manuscripts for consideration. This call presents an exceptional opportunity for authors to share their distinctive viewpoints, weave threads into the national literary tapestry, and shape the trajectory of South African literature.

Exploring Boundless Narratives

Submissions are open across an array of categories, including novels, poetry and short story anthologies, drama and theatre writing, narrative non-fiction, children's and young adults' books. The initiative warmly welcomes manuscripts that explore novel ideas, address themes of national significance, and mirror the diverse mosaic of South African culture and heritage. Manuscripts penned in official South African languages, including Khoisan languages, are enthusiastically encouraged.

Support for Authors

Successful authors will receive a grant of R25,000.00 for content development and will be paired with experienced publishers to guide them through the publishing process.

Interested authors are invited to visit the official ANFASA website at www.anfasa.org.za and the DSAC website at https://www.dsac.gov.za/ for comprehensive submission guidelines and requirements. Manuscripts must be prepared in Microsoft Word format. The submission window for manuscript closes on 8 September 2023, and submissions received after this date will not be considered. Authors are urged to submit early and ensure their entries adhere to all stipulated guidelines.

DSAC and ANFASA seek to appoint reputable publishers for the production of captivating literary works that will inspire and engage readers across the nation through the DSAC Publishing Hub initiative.

Revitalizing the Publishing Industry

The DSAC Publishing Hub is a groundbreaking endeavor aimed at supporting authors, nurturing local literary talent, and revitalizing the South African publishing industry. In pursuit of these goals, DSAC has partnered with ANFASA to appoint four reputable South African publishers with a demonstrated track record of excellence. These publishers will play an instrumental role in producing five books each from the manuscripts submitted through the Open Call for manuscript submissions.

Scope of the Publishers' Role

The chosen Publishers will be responsible for the successful production, publishing, marketing, and distribution of the successful books. While editing services will be managed separately, publishers will contribute significantly to the realization of the DSAC Publishing Hub’s objective.

Interested and qualified publishers are invited to submit their profiles, proposals, and quotations for consideration. The deadline for publisher submissions is 17 August 2023, and no late entries will be accepted.

Selection Panel Invitation: Proficient and experienced practitioners with expertise in the book value chain, language experts, and published authors are invited to apply to be part of the Selection Panel. The panel's responsibilities include reviewing manuscripts, providing recommendations, undertaking developmental editing, and offering industry-related advice.

The call for practitioners to apply to be part of the of the Selection Panel is now open, with a closing date of 17 August 2023. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply through the ANFASA website at www.anfasa.org.za and the DSAC website at https://www.dsac.gov.za/
