Memeza Joins Forces with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Soshanguve to Strengthen the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

10 April 2025 - Pretoria, South Africa - Memeza, a pioneering social enterprise in community safety and crime prevention, has partnered with the Community Advice Centre from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), one of South Africa’s largest and most influential tertiary institutions, to drive a united front in combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across campuses and surrounding communities.

This powerful partnership is in response to the alarming statistics plaguing South African society. According to recent data from the South African Police Service (SAPS), over 53,000 sexual offences were reported in the 2022/2023 year alone. Shockingly, 11,734 cases were reported between January and March 2023, with 10,512 of these cases involving female victims. Furthermore, 1,051 of these sexual offences occurred in educational institutions—including schools, universities, colleges, and day-care centres.

TUT’s vast reach, hosting more than 60,000 students across multiple campuses, provides a critical platform to influence and inspire real change in the fight against GBV. Memeza will roll out its innovative GBV prevention technologies, which will include the Memeza Personal Alarm system at the first of many GBVF Awareness campaigns on the 10th of April 2025, at the TUT Soshanguve campus, with the aim to create a safer environment for students.

“This is more than a partnership. It’s a movement for justice and safety for students. TUT is showing what it means to lead not only in education but in championing a South Africa where women and children can feel safe again,” said Tlhogi Ngcobo spokesperson and Programmes Manager of Memeza.

This initiative marks the beginning of a broader goal to empower every South African University campus to be GBV-resilient, with the TUT Soshanguve Campus taking the lead.
