MINDS is hosting its inaugural scholarship leadership development training from 05 – 09 August at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The scholarship programme was launched in 2017 as part of MINDS commitment to Africa’s development by providing opportunities for African youth to pursue post-graduate study within Africa, but always outside their own country. This provides the scholars an opportunity to establish networks with young people in other countries.
The scholarship programme is designed to produce future African leaders who are knowledgeable and comfortable with the continent beyond their national boundaries, and develop leaders with a continental development mindset. It is our belief that the development of the continent can only be achieved through greater cooperation between African countries. It is hoped that this outlook will make it easier for MINDS scholars to work together to create a more cohesive continent for the benefit of all its people.
The scholarship programme is collaborating with credible universities across the continent. To date, MINDS has awarded scholarships to eleven scholars, seven of who have since graduated. The scholarship is currently supported by the Diamond Empowerment Fund, Mastercard Foundation, Nedbank’s Eyethu Trust, Old Mutual Emerging Markets, as well as the Government of Rwanda.
The leadership training programme is designed to equip young African scholars as agents for social cohesion and economic integration in addressing the continent’s development challenges. The themes to be addressed in leadership programme include economic integration, pan –Africanism, youth engagement in governance processes, leadership skills training, and nation building and driving societal change.

Tour host Jazzy Masala to forge creative collaboration between India and South Africa through workshops and performances - The Lyric at Gold Reef City - 27 and 28 July
Johannesburg, June 2019: Globally acclaimed dance group, Kathak Rockers, is headed to South Africa for a limited season of performances and workshops that will play an important role in forging an ongoing creative relationship between South Africa and India.
Hosted by Johannesburg-based Jazzy Masala Creative, the tour offers dance aficionados and those who relish being immersed in different cultural experiences the opportunity to witness Kathak Rocker’s electrifying Indian dance fusion performances live. (Watch a video here).
Led by Kumar Sharma (India) and Svetlana Tulasi (Russia), Kathak Rockers offer up a spectacular interpretation of Kathak, one of the major forms of Indian classical dance. As witnessed on multiple platforms (including many different performance-focused reality television shows in India), Kathak Rockers inject contemporary energy and passion into this historic dance form.
“We are thrilled to be bringing Kathak Rockers to South Africa,” says Versha Magan, founder of Jazzy Masala and a well-known performer, dance Guru , choreographer and actor. “Experiencing a performance by this troupe is guaranteed to lift spirits and leave audience members with a lifelong love for this particular form of dance.”
Through Jazzy Masala, Magan has long believed in the power of collaboration and cultural exchange across global markets – and the Kathak Rocker tour is no different. In the spirit of partnership, the live performances will include 6 dancers from India and 10 from South Africa, providing a fantastic showcase of collaboration and creative skills exchange in action. And, alongside two unmissable performances, Jazzy Masala is hosting two workshops that will focus on the transfer of skills between the troupe and a range of South African-based participants, from professional dancers to dance schools and artists. Lasting between four and six hours, each workshop will include face-to-face learning and transfer of skills, and an opportunity to interact with the Kathak Rockers.
The workshops will play a role in Magan’s aim to promote the exchange of learning between India and South African artists - and to stimulate the development of the Kathak artform in South Africa, and raise its standards of performance and practice.
Co-leader of Kathak Rockers’ tour to South Africa, Kumar Sharma, is a national scholarship holder in Kathak from India’s Ministry of Culture and an active researcher of around 20 Folk Dances of India. Among many other accomplishments, Sharma has choreographed multiple performances for Indian reality television shows including DID Super Moms, Jhalak Dikhla Ja 6 and 7, Boogi Woogi, India's Got Talent 5 and more current, Super Dancer chapter 3 on Sony TV
Born into a mixed Russian and Indian family, Svetlana Tulasi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kathak Dance from Prayag Sangeet Samiti University of Indian Classical Music & Dance (Allahabad, India). One of her many career highlights was performing at the opening ceremony of ISSF World Cup 2019 in Delhi, together with Kumar Sharma and Kathak Rockers. (You can watch a short documentary on Tulasi here).
“I am confident that the upcoming Kathak Rockers tour to South Africa will play a significant role in creating an international platform for our own artists to perform with this incredible troupe,” says Magan. “It will also further strengthen the arts and culture relationship between India and South Africa, which already has a rich history and deep connection.
“The global space of collaboration is ever increasing, and countries need to seize the opportunity to grow and connect. Having the Kathak Rockers here drives this new age thinking of bringing the global to South Africa,” concludes Magan.

Joburg Theatre in partnership with Keeloz Global Entertainment will be re-staging one of South Africa’s most iconic symbols of the struggle for social and political freedom and justice, Sarafina! Directed by Nhlanhla Ngema and starring Noxolo Dlamini as Sarafina, this internationally acclaimed Broadway hit musical will run from 19 July to 11 August 2019 on the Joburg Theatre’s Mandela Stage.
Sarafina! was originally conceived by Dr. Mbongeni Ngema who wrote and arranged most of the music and lyrics, with additional songs by Hugh Masekela. As part of the succession plan, Dr Ngema has awarded the rights to produce Sarafina! to his younger brother, Nhlanhla Ngema.
Nhlanhla Ngema starred as Stimela SaseZola in the original theatre production of Sarafina! as well as the movie version. He has held principal roles in other Ngema productions including Magic at 4am, The Best of Mbongeni Ngema, House of Shaka and Asinamali, amongst others. In 1997, Nhlanhla was amongst the few South Africans who were cast in Disney’s original Broadway production of The Lion King in New York where he was one of the lead singers.
He has been an Assistant Director for various productions including Duma Ndlovu’s Bergville Stories, Mbongeni Ngema’s The Lion of the East and the Playhouse Theatre’s 2010 World Cup production Ingqayi-Ingqayi. While in the United States in 2002 he directed Woza Albert! at the La Mamma Theatre in New York. He was most recently assistant director on the productions of Sarafina! at the State Theatre and Joburg Theatre in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
“I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to direct this internationally acclaimed Broadway hit musical. I have always aspired to direct a big musical production and it is fantastic that my first big production is Sarafina! I am grateful to my brother, Mbongeni Ngema, for grooming me to realise my potential and giving me this opportunity,” says Nhlanhla Ngema.
Set against the backdrop of the 1976 student revolts against Afrikaans being used as a medium of instruction, Sarafina! follows the activities of a fictional class at Morris Isaacson High School. Told through story, song and dance, this proudly South African musical deals with the radicalisation of a young school girl, Sarafina, who becomes embroiled in the riots and is tortured by the South African police. She inspires her classmates with her commitment to the struggle against the apartheid government.
In the musical's explosive finale the students present a class play about the symbolic Day of Liberation they all dream of — when their hero, Nelson Mandela is released after decades in prison.
“It is befitting that South Africa’s most successful theatrical export return to the Mandela Stage for a second season at Joburg Theatre. As we have witnessed with past generations, this world class production is capable of re-igniting the belief within young people to overcome whatever challenges their generation has to contend with,” says Makhaola Ndebele, Artistic Director at Joburg City Theatres.
The powerhouse musical took Broadway by storm in January 1988 during Black History Month culminating in a two-year run on Broadway in Manhattan, New York City; and a 5-year tour of the United States of America. Concurrently a second cast of Sarafina! premiered in 1988, and went on a four year world tour which included the United Kingdom, several parts of Europe, Australia, Japan, as well as various countries in west Africa.
Sarafina! was later converted into a Hollywood feature film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Leleti Khumalo, Dr Mbongeni Ngema, Dr John Kani, and Dr Mirriam Makeba; with the sound track produced by Dr Mbongeni Ngema and Quincy Jones. This captured the imagination of the world and engraved Sarafina! as a symbol of African triumph and hope across the world.
The play was nominated for five Tony Awards, namely: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. It was later nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards; and also won 11 NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People) Image Awards in Beverley Hills. NAACP is an organisation based in the United States of America.

The launch of the Tshwane Institute for Continuing Education (TICE) on June 6th 2019 sees an exciting – and uniquely experienced - player join this important sector of the South African economy.
The Tshwane Institute for Continuing Education (Pty) Ltd. (TICE) is a wholly owned subsidiary of TUT Enterprise Holdings (TUTEH), itself a wholly owned company of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
TICE’s vision is to be most effective catalyst and facilitator of positive, developmental and value creating transitions in human capital. This is driven by its positioning as part of TUT which provides TICE with a rich understanding, and deep insight, into the value of technical skills in the continuing education sector.
Occupying this niche means TICE stands out in the training and skills development market - and is poised to make a difference at a time when the world and Africa stand on the cusp of a seismic shift in human capital requirements. As part of enabling this transition, TICE’s offering focuses on transitioning the unskilled into the skilled, the technical into managerial and entrepreneurial, and the small businesspeople into large businesspeople
In this trailblazer position, TICE aims to facilitate skills development, continuing education and continuing professional development in South Africa. As part of its broader vision, the institute also intends to play a meaningful role in strategically selected countries on the African continent. TICE’S secondary, but no less important purpose, is to assist organisations and individuals to transition their competencies and skills into the “Future of Work”. This is especially urgent while the current world of work, with its attendant set of competencies, is transitioning to the future world of work, with its attendant new competencies.
“TUT has always had a passion for further learning but we’re now taking this into a vibrant, robust and innovative standalone institution,” says Nkuli Maphanga, TUT Enterprise Holding Communication and Stakeholder Manager. “We’re extremely excited about the role we can play in the South African and African economic and educational landscape through TICE and look forward to working with organisations and individuals in this endeavour.”
Historically, TUT has offered Short Learning Programmes (SLP) in various faculties and departments. Now, the university has co-ordinated these different SLPs into a single entity in the form of TICE.
TICE will operate as a network orchestrator in facilitating collaboration with and within TUT as well as with other role players.
TUT excels at several niche areas – and these will be leveraged as part of TICE’s offerings. Initially, short courses will be offered in Engineering, Programming, Information Science, Environmental Science, Arts, Data Science, Leadership, Research, Sales and Marketing and Communications.
A strong area of focus will be Needs Identification Analysis by TICE’s expert team. This will include working organisations to identify and analyse gaps that can be closed through SLPs. In this way, TICE will assist in building the country’s labour force. “As part of our Needs Identification Analysis approach, we will leverage TUT’s standing as the leading university of technology on the African continent,” add Maphanga. “In this, we are more than simply a continuing education institution but an institution that is playing our part in preparing the nation for the future world of work.”
Alongside governmental agencies, the private sector and individuals, TICE’s different stakeholders include TUT itself, with the aim of upskilling staff and current students to take their place in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. TUT alumni will also benefit from courses specifically aimed at upskilling former graduates in the transition to the new, digital space.
In the near future, TICE’s SLPs will be supported by TICE-curated educational events such as conferences, symposia, and colloquia that will establish the institution as an expert in the nexus between technology and the “Future of Work”.
The newly-launched TICE website provides an extensive library of further learning courses as well as details of dates and locations of upcoming SLPs. Courses lined up include Principles & Practices of Project Management, taking place on June 24th for four days. This will be followed by a five day SLP in Applied Statistical Methods of Data Analyses for Postgraduate Level Studies and Research.

June 4th 2019: A stellar array of iconic South African artists is giving voice to the global refugee crisis with an inaugural concert for refugees to be held at Johannesburg’s Linder Auditorium on June 21st.
Already confirmed for this unmissable event are Pops Mohamed, Sibongile Khumalo, Gcina Mhlophe and Yvonne Chaka Chaka, with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) and Buskaid adding to the heavyweight line-up. The music programme of jazz, Afro-pop and light classical music will be accompanied by a compelling photography exhibition and a video presentation that movingly captures the stories of refugees, with a particular focus on women and children.
The concert is being held to mark the United Nations’ World Refugee Day on June 20th which each year commemorates the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees. This year, World Refugee Day also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee – and the upcoming concert at the Linder Auditorium provides an excellent opportunity for South Africans to stand with refugees. All profits from the event will go directly to to providing service and support to refugees and other forcibly displaced people in South Africa.
“We are honoured to have such incredible musicians taking part in the concert - and are calling on South Africans to enjoy a very special evening of music that’s devoted to one of the most urgent crises facing the world today,” says Ayhan Cetin, Executive Director of the Turquoise Harmony Institute (THI).
THI is spearheading A Concert for Refugees, working with partner institutions SAMRO, Universal Rights Association (URA), Horizon Education Trust (HET), Time to Care SA, South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), BUSKAID, Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF), Music In Africa (MIA) and Wits University.
“We are gratified that so many organisations and artists have answered the call to highlight the plight of refugees this World Refugee Day,” adds Cetin. “This is chance for the public to show that they stand with refugees – globally and here in South Africa.”
A recent report published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that an unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. Among these are nearly 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18. There is also an estimated 10 million stateless people who have been denied a nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement. Nearly one person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution.
South Africa itself has more than a million asylum seekers and is home to the highest number of unresolved asylum cases in the world. Refugees in the country face issues of subsistence, shelter, protection against crime and eviction, and the ongoing threat of xenophobia.
Since its inception in 2006, THI has used the culture of Ubuntu to serve the people of South Africa and the world, propelled by a belief that the future of humanity must be built on a culture of coexistence, dialogue and tolerance. The organisation is guided by a vision of enhancing and developing social capital – through building personal relationships and networks in order to achieve mutual understanding. Among its multifaceted activities are The International Festival of Language & Culture and Dialogue & Friendship Dinners, as well as conferences, seminars and art and music-led initiatives.
“We assure music lovers of an extraordinary experience that will remain in their memories for many years to come as well as a deeper understanding of the situation and difficulties suffered by refugees,” concludes Cetin.
A Concert for Refugees 2019 will be South Africa’s first concert for refugees.
To be part of this night of music and compassion, you can purchase your tickets at Webtickets or Shoprite / Checkers outlets for R200. For the Concert for Refugees which takes place at Linder Auditorium – Wits University on Friday 21 June 2019 at 18h30.

Gcina does her most important work through charismatic performances and works to preserve storytelling as a means to keep history alive as well as encourage South African children to read. Gcina delivers her stories in four of South Africa’s languages, English, Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa, which makes it possible for South Africa’s people to receive her stories in a language that can be understood by a diverse majority.
Buskaid
The Buskaid Soweto String Project was established by Rosemary Nalden in January 1997 in response to requests from the local Diepkloof community. Initially the fledgling project consisted of fifteen members of the original Diepkloof Project and a few new beginners. Since then it has grown exponentially, and currently comprises approximately 115 students, all of whom are drawn from the less privileged local community.
The Buskaid Music School has produced a string ensemble with a formidable reputation for high standards of performance and a sophisticated grasp of musical style. As a result, it has become widely sought-after for a variety of functions and events, many of which are of an extremely prestigious nature. These include appearances with a number of international artists such as Sir John, Eliot Gardiner, Steven Isserlis, Bernarda Fink, Melvyn Tan and Sir Karl Jenkins as well as several performances in the presence of former President Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki, as well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, amongst others.

It has continued to consistently perform regular series of Symphony Seasons, attracting the best international and local soloists and conductors, as well as being the orchestra of choice for State functions in Gauteng.

This spring, Joburg will groove to the rhythm of jazz unleashed as the city celebrates the 22nd Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. Africa’s premier jazz festival takes place from 26-28 September 2019, where we look to connect people beyond age, gender and genres. Jazz lovers will be reintroduced to the music, while novices will discover the magic of jazz. At its best, jazz is free, fun, and unleashed.
The magic is woven into a line-up that includes multi-award winning Mozambican composer and saxophonist, Moreira Chonguiça who is without a doubt one of the finest creators of the innovative and original African jazz form. It’s youthful and energetic, borrowing from the Latin world as it is rooted in a modern African palette. Cuban born pianist, Roberto Fonseca draws on classical influences, rock influence, and hip-hop. Cuba is one of the important jazz centres of the world. Incredible drummer, Manu Katché brings his unrelenting rhythmic charm to the SBJOJ stage. The French drummer embodies the spirit of jazz unleashed, having worked with everyone from Sting, Branford Marsalis, Peter Gabriel, Jan Garbarek, and Youssou N'Dour to name a few. A rare treat on the bill is Ken Peplowski, who's been described as the greatest living clarinetist in jazz.
The festival will open with the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra led by trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis who is, to many, the public face of jazz music. His ability to draw on history to point to a dignified future has been central to the global jazz tradition since he emerged on the scene. His band will share honours with the ZAR Orchestra led by Mzansi’s own eclectic horns-man, Marcus Wyatt. The South African trumpeter was specifically chosen by Marsalis for the gig to celebrate jazz as a shared value in the struggle to perfect freedom and democracy in South Africa and the United States. The two rise to showcase the jazz traditions from these two countries.
Another trumpeter not be missed is Nigerian-born, Etuk Ubong, who is fast becoming a notable voice in jazz. Ubong’s music draws inspiration from great jazz trumpeters that stretch from Hugh Masekela to Miles Davis. The larger expanses of African jazz will rev up the festival through the music of Kyekyeku & Ghanalogue Highlife, a six-piece group who play a brand of Hifghlife - music formed by Fela Kuti, The historic band Stimela, the iconic Sipho Mabuse, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, singer & songwriter, Siphokazi, and The Soil will underscore the diversity that makes up South African jazz. Mzansi’s own rising star, vocalist and pianist, Nomfundo Xaluva explores local traditions for global tastes along with Nokukhanya Dlamini.
Not to be missed is Sankofa, led by US born and SA based saxophonist and composer, Salim Washington. The band is simultaneously rooted in Mzansi, connected to the US while inspired by Pan African ideas. Sankofa is a Ghanaian philosophy looking back to inform the future. This is jazz that is as aware of hip-hop as it is of the blues and Maskandi.
Arguably, the most daring Avant-Garde collaboration on the bill, ZACHUSA is a multinational outfit that features Swiss pianist Malcolm Braff, South African drummer Kesivan Naidoo, and American bassist, Reggie Washington. This is jazz of the rigour not unlike the incredible tenor-man, Alexander Beets the legendary Dutch tenor who is also on the bill.
Bringing on other great music beyond straight ahead jazz, the line-up features soul singer Rahsaan Patterson to the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz stage, alongside other soul jewels like RJ Benjamin.
The 2019 SBJOJ features a never-to-be repeated all-star band performance to celebrate 35 Years of the Standard Bank Young Artist (SBYA) Awards. The performance will feature previous award winners like Norwegian based and South African born saxophonist, Shannon Mowday (2007), who will join the elder stateswoman of South African jazz, Sibongile Khumalo (1993), inimitable composer-pianist, Nduduzo Makhathini (2015), singular bassist, Concord Nkabinde (2006), and others like Gloria Bosman (2000), Bokani Dyer (2011) and Mark Fransman (2008) to name a few.
The 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, trumpeter, Mandla Mlangeni will also perform at this year’s festival.
“We are excited about what the 2019 line-up holds for us, as we mark one of the longest jazz sponsorship partnerships in the country (21 years this year)”, says Thulani Sibeko, Standard Bank Chief Marketing Officer. “Of particular joy for us is the large number of Standard Bank Young Artist Jazz alumni performing this year– including the opening night once off all-star band of previous winners. It is proof of the critical role we can and do play in moving artists’ careers forward.”
“We are perennially inspired by jazz as a symbol of freedom. It’s a freedom to be creative and explore beyond the tradition itself. This is at the heart of our idea of Jazz Unleashed. To go to the edges of our great music and rediscover it anew,” states Mantwa Chinoamadi, Festival Producer at T-Musicman.
“Every year we strive to bring new audiences and grow the festival. This is not possible without demonstrating jazz’s ability to grow; It was important to mark 25 years of our South African democracy with a collaboration with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Centre. It takes our footprint global. This is important for the role that the festival must play in cultural diplomacy” says Peter Tladi, CEO of T-Musicman.

At the core of the 9th Annual Global Business Roundtable Gathering which will take place from 27th to 29th March at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, is the question of whether leaders from across sectors can impact investment opportunities towards creating Sustainable Global Growth and Resource Distribution which is a critical issue facing the global economy.
“The starting point for all leaders in society must be an unwavering and resolute commitment to ethical leadership. Whether you are leading a family, a business, a ministry, an NGO, an organisation or a nation, your leadership must be grounded in the moral values – justice, honesty, empathy, respect among them – that govern behavior and choices,’ says convener of the #GBRCongress2019 and chair of Sakhumnotho, Mr Sipho Mseleku.
Ethical leadership to create sustainable global growth is the cornerstone of manifesting investments that sustain adds Mseleku. He further points out that it’s important to remember that nations rise and fall, depending on the person in leadership at a particular time – and this applies to every sector of society.
“Achieving Sustainable Global Growth and Even Distribution of Resources” is the theme of this year’s gathering which will run The 2019 event builds on the high-level success of previous summits which have helped turn GBR into an internationally recognised global platform for SMMEs, corporate and government to access trade and investment opportunities across various economic sectors.
As always, a highlight of the GBR is the speaker line-up which this year features keynote speakers, Minister Lindiwe Zulu (Department of Small Business Development), Deputy Minister Madala Masuku (Department of Economic Development), Professor Thuli Madonsela, former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, and Ambassador Bene Mpoko of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Over the 3 days the heavy weight speaker line up will unpack issues relating to a variety of global concerns such as:-
Previous GBR speakers have included South Africa’s Chief Justice, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, former South African President, Kgalema Motlanthe, former Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda, The Queen Mother of the Royal Bafokeng, Dr Bonolo Molotlegi, Benjamin Mkapa, Djondo, Dr Sam Motsweonyane, Roland Msiska, Essop Pahad, Solange Mabignath, Lindiwe Dlamini (Swaziland), Jabu Mabuza, Nervous Mumba and Gideon Dlamini amongst many others.
“Our speaker line-up is always a highlight of our programme - and this year is no exception,” says Ronnie Mulaudzi, GBR Programme Director. “We are anticipating that delegates will glean powerful insights and knowledge from our keynote speakers that will inspire them for the rest of the programme’s activities and into the future.”
With its emphasis on facilitating focused trade and Investment summits within the overall event, GBR is uniquely designed to bring countries and global players under a single roof for business match-making opportunities with investors, strategic partners, donors and more.
Over the past eight years, the GBR platform has become known for its ability to host a series of continental and country-hosted roundtable discussions. In particular, the popular country roundtable discussions are geared towards promoting and highlighting those sectors in specific countries that are open for investment. As part of this, real-time projects are showcased at GBR by representatives who are seeking technical or financial partners.
“This year we are focusing on sustainable global growth and the even distribution of resources,” comments Mulaudzi. “The energy, automotive, agriculture, education, property, and infrastructure sectors will all be represented within this framework – and we welcome all those with a business or development interest in these sectors to be part of this year’s GBR. With our additional emphasis on job creation, we believe that this year’s summit will also be of real benefit to all stakeholders in the global economy.”
As part of its overall mission, GBR is also keenly focused on those areas that are aligned to the business and financial development (including trade and investment opportunities) that are at the heart of its work. These include Science & Technology, Education & Intellectual Development, Sports, Arts & Culture, Leadership, Governance & Politics and Media & Communications.
GBR is additionally recognised for its emphasis on the importance of Family & Society and the spiritual development of those participating in the global economy. “High moral values and ethics in the way we do business are a fundamental aspect of everything that we do,” affirms Mulaudzi.
The added value for those delegates participating in the upcoming Johannesburg GBR is tapping into a network of 80 countries. Currently GBR’s global footprint spans 80 countries - with plans to be active in 100 countries by 2020. Among these are 43 countries in Africa, covering all regions on the continent (SADC, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa and North Africa). GBR is also active in Europe (14 countries), North America (USA and Canada), South America, Asia, Middle East, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean Islands.
With 100 exhibitors and around 500 delegates a day, GBR represents an enriching and impactful opportunity for businesses, organisations, individuals and agencies involved in the global economy.

Defying the odds and breaking new ground through a new movement called #ECAfrica100 goes live today using digital media platforms as the opportunity to share African business stories
South African Visionary Vanessa Perumal through collaboration in business networks is innovating, breaking new ground and filling a much needed gap to amplify and market African businesses looking to find new markets, connect to clients and use the power of technology to scale business.
Using Digital Disruption JT Comms the company started by Perumal goes live with a Global Platform for African Businesses Through #ECAfrica100 which stands for Entrepreneur Connect Africa.
With unemployment catapulting, #ECAfrica100 is about doing business unusual to propel job creation through economic transformation and accelerate penetration into new markets.
Using technology as a disruptor to consciously drive conversations that entrepreneurial collaboration, innovation and trade; drives this groundbreaking digital TV platform which launches simultaneously in South Africa, Congo, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
Media and communications expert Vanessa Perumal is taking her innovative practice in the field to the next level. Her company, JT Communication Solutions, renowned for delivering creative entrepreneurs to the marketplace, she has now has now successfully launched several media platforms including a podcast series called #ECAfrica100 on Africa Business Radio which goes live on 11 February 2019.
Entrepreneur Connect Africa (#ECAfrica100) facilitates collaboration and exposure for African businesses to global markets. Perumal is an activist whose professional roots are in arts , business journalism and social justice.
“I’m excited that we can pioneer and use the power of digital to tell our own stories. Finding 100 Entrepreneurs many of whom are unsung traders who seldom get media coverage, so desperate for market access and more Public Relations and marketing should not be this hard to fix. To be able to solve problems in collaborative business markets is the game-change and puts us at the cutting edge of using our business networks to create sustainable business models,’ says Perumal.
As an African mom, she recognised that it is possible to do what one loves while looking after her loved ones. She exchanged her journalism career for professional communications consultancy. This was despite being a woman of colour in South Africa where, although opportunities exist in principle, realising one’s aspirations to contribute to real social change is often stymied by bureaucracy and racial and gender politics. This is not unique to the country.
“When I realised entrepreneurship was the opportunity, I dived in. My kids were young and starting JT Comms 15 years ago solved my problem (the ‘competing’ demands of career and family). That I was able to create an income stream was a double whammy! To think I could solve global problems doing what I love makes the move worth it.”
Vanessa Perumal's practice is driven by transformation and change. It is therefore not surprising that JT Communications Solutions is leading in disrupting the way in which content is delivered to consumers, enabling entrepreneurs to gain access to markets in ways that were previously unimaginable.
However, she is a realistic visionary, noting that entrepreneurship "is situational but cash flow related, it is also about solving your own personal financial needs but when you are a social entrepreneur, I reckon it is innate. Social entrepreneurship is about making an impact for the greater good, whether it is for the environment, humanity or a cause. That is why the saying "those that think they can change the world usually do" is right”.
The #ECAfrica100 series facilitates business conversations of international importance by profiling and promoting entrepreneurial stories in order to highlight the importance of dialogue around issues of entrepreneurship in Africa on a global scale. Africa is the source of the hardware that builds technology (inclusively for your many gadgets such as your Smartphone, coffee, tea, food and flowers) and African entrepreneurs can provide the solutions to the continent’s economic challenges.
#ECAfrica100 will go live from 11 February 2019 on diverse digital and traditional media platforms which include Viva Nation TV, Africa Business Radio, WeTalkBiz, and Tropics Magazine from January 2019.

South Africa joins the world, as we mourn the passing of Zimbabwe’s master of song, Oliver Mtukudzi. “Tuku”, as he was popularly known, passed on this last Wednesday, January 23rd. He was 66 years old. Searching for an mbira sound on the guitar, he fused the Zimbabwean music style “Jiti”, the traditional drumming patterns of his clan, the Katekwe, South African mbaqanga, the marimba, Afro-Pop styles and conjured up over 67 albums with his own signature music sound, “Tuku Music”.
A recipient of many accolades and awards, in 1992 Oliver won the M-Net award for Best Soundtrack for Neria, a movie in which he also starred. In 2003 he received a pair of KORA awards (Lifetime Achievement; Best Southern African Male Artist), a Channel O Reel Music Video Award (Best African Language) and an Honorary Arts degree from the University Of Zimbabwe. A dedicated and inspired African artist, 2004 brought a NAMA (National Arts Merit Awards) award for Best Group/Male vocalist, 2006 a ZIMA (Zimbabwe Music Awards) Music Ambassador award and, in 2008 another NAMA for Outstanding Musician. 2009 found Oliver receiving yet another Honorary M.Sc in fine arts, this one from Women’s University in Africa (Harare, Zimbabwe). 2003 also found Tuku featured on the cover of Time magazine as champion of the Zimbabwean people and their music.

From entrepreneurs to corporate leaders: the inaugural ‘She Powers SA’ Women’s Leadership Conference is purposely focusing on driving an ecosystem to empower and promote women participation in business across sectors and at all levels of the economy.
The Inaugural #ShePowersSA Women’s Leadership Conference to be held in Johannesburg on 15 November 2018 is determined to offer solution based intervention, create more access and buffer challenges and barriers that preclude women from participating equally in an economy driven by a male dominated ecosystem. Alleviating poverty and converting more opportunities that translate to jobs is high on the agenda of #ShePowersSA
Under the theme ‘The Psychology Of Leading In Turbulent Times’, speakers will discuss opportunities available to women, the eradication of barriers to economic participation and increasing women participation in the world of business in both the public and private sectors.
“As we embark on our first She Powers SA Women’s Leadership Conference in November, we wish to draw attention to and advocate for issues that hamper efforts to achieve gender parity in workplaces. We believe that the economic cost of few opportunities for female participation in business necessitates that all stakeholders should address this issue in terms of advocacy, education, policy and economic support systems for women” says Nomsa Nteleko, convener of the conference.
Founded by Theo Tshanga and Nomsa Nteleko, She Powers SA also aims to determine where the gaps lie in the policy and legal frameworks with both the community and individuals responsible to assist in finding lasting solutions for women to participate in all levels of the economy.
While the South African government and private sector has shown its commitment to stem all forms of women emancipation and economic participation through various policy and legislative measures, despite this, female leadership and avenues to partake in business continue unabated, with massive social and economic costs to females and the broader society at large.
Speakers for the leadership conference will include award winning singer Lira who will address audiences on ‘Leading Beyond Limits’ alongside HR Executive, Phumeza Pepeta who will talk ‘Leading Yourself’ and Tanya Miranda leading a discussion on ‘People centric Leadership’. Chartered Accountant (CA) Senzani Mudau will speak on ‘Leading to accelerate change’; Akona Ngcuka tackling the subject of ‘Authentic Leadership’ and Siphokazi Simandla who is the programme director will address the theme of the day “The Psychology of leading in turbulent times”.
“She Powers SA is dedicated to creating platforms that will educate and help uplift the lives of women through economic participation. The vision behind this leadership conference is to be a catalyst in enabling an ecosystem for inclusive development across sectors and be a bridge across the divides in our country, so it is appropriate that we kick off the summit with this focus on the empowerment of women working on the margins of the economy, who have a great deal to offer in terms of creativity, innovation and unique business insights” adds Theo Tshanga Ziyana Business Consulting and Training.
This year’s conference will also focus on finding solutions and sharing best practices in addressing economic participation in various sectors of South African business,” says co-founder of the leadership conference, Nomsa Nteleko of OS Holdings.
The target audience for the conference includes CEOs, entrepreneurs, directors, divisional heads and executives at large. These groups have been identified as people who are lagging behind in accessing economic opportunities.

Xolani Mpahlwa, CEO of Blackstone Consulting, will represent South Africa as a quality management expert at the ISO WORLD CONGRESS: ISO/TC 176 in Portugal, 19-23 November 2018.
Mpahlwa will be presenting a new work item, on Organisation Change Management (OCM) for South Africa. However, a global challenge, requires use of the ISO 37001 is an anti-bribery management systems standard that specifies a series of measures to help organisations detect, verify, respond to and prevent bribery and corruption.
Blackstone is an ISO 9001:2015 certified management consulting firm. Mpahlwa holds an MBA degree and has 20 years management experience in standardisation, testing, supplier quality, project quality, laboratory quality, and OEM quality assurance.
Each year, 14th October, members of the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) celebrate World Standards Day. In doing so they are paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical specifications, regulations and standards that are published as international standards (ISO).
An International Standard (IS), established by consensus, describes how to achieve an optimal outcome time after time by using an agreed and consistent approach.
Mpahlwa hopes the new standard, ISO 37001 will challenge South Africans to tackle mediocrity, and to encourage excellence. “We can achieve governance and sustainability through standardisation. It requires consistency throughout the governance process. Combined with accountability standards, it enables entities to perform optimally and meet both the entity’s and stakeholders’ needs.”
Studies have determined that the benefits of standards for various work sectors support and conclude that they significantly contribute to the national GDP, and enhance business performance in terms of profit, growth or both. International trade agreements are concluded through the multi-lateral World Trade Organisation (WTO) process and are referenced to standards developed for various strategic trading items including medical devices, food, components, and oil and gas. In this way, standardisation enables global trade through bilateral trade agreements to take effect, and protects society from harm during use of standardised products or services.
“ISO 37001 provides us with a robust framework for the reduction and eradication of corruption in our country,” notes Mpahlwa. “Shareholders expect a return on investment, but where state-owned companies are concerned, the government as shareholder receives little ROI due to bribery and or corrupt practices.”
Mpahlwa says South Africa’s economy continues to be severely impacted by corruption and bribery, and that it continues to be a major obstacle in the way of the country’s socio-economic development.
“Never underestimate the negative societal implications of any form of bribe or corruption,” he contends. “High-level cases of corruption have led to the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into tax administration and governance at the South African Revenue Service, the Zondo Commission on State Capture, as well as the Eskom Inquiry.”
These cases could have been avoided, Mpahlwa maintains, had institutions, controls been overseen by quality, ethical and visionary leadership, and had accurately applied management systems.
“Fidentia, for instance, wasted an estimated R500m intended to assist 47 000 widows and orphans. It’s a terrible example of just how systematic and debilitating corruption can be. Similarly, when organisations such as Nkonki close their doors, the resultant job losses negatively impact families’ quality of life and exacerbate societal ills such as unemployment and crime.“
Blackstone Consulting workshops aim to transform the mind-set of attendees by providing a framework to awaken corporate citizenship, while providing practical tools for the management of bribery and corruption in organisations. The company is also launching a campaign today, 100 Bribery Free Days South Africa, to promote ethical and anti-bribery behaviour in South Africa.
“Resilience requires us to avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems, and rather to embrace the tools within our reach to turn the South African economy around.,”Mpahlwa reiterates.

Notes to Editor
About the ISO 37001: The ISO 37001 standard provides requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, reviewing and improving anti-bribery management systems, and is designed for use / implementation in all types of organisations and sectors.
The standard can be used to address any type of bribery challenge faced by an entity, including adopting an anti-bribery policy; appointing a person to oversee anti-bribery compliance; training; risk assessments and due diligence on projects and across the business value chain; implementing financial and commercial controls, and instituting reporting and investigation procedures.
Benefits of the ISO 37001 include enabling organisations to reduce bribery risks by implementing financial controls in the early stages of transactions; assisting organisations perform continuous improvement of anti-bribery practices; gaining competitive advantage and ensuring that business associates and customers are devoted to positive anti-bribery processes. The new standard will complement ISO 37000 (Governance of Organisations) and ISO 26000 (Corporate Social Responsibility).
The context for the ISO 37001: R45.6 billion in fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure in government departments and state entities was identified by the auditor-general in 2016-17. There are many other examples in the AG’s audit outcomes for other institutions funded by the fiscus. This is clearly an indication of the current inability of those charged with management of public finances to deal decisively with bribery and corruption.
