Press Release 27 March 2020
Covid-19 #LockDownSA - Entrepreneurs Respond to Support Our Presidents’ Call to Action through Collaborative Movement #ECAfrica
In response to the President's call to unite during the #21DaysLockDown, Entrepreneur Connect Africa #ECAfrica, a movement of South African SMMEs and Entrepreneurs are stepping-up and stepping-in to help solve the challenges we face during this period and beyond.
A digital disruptor, #ECAfrica -Entrepreneur Connect Africa- was launched as a social media hashtag five years ago. Using digital spaces, the platform creates a movement and ecosystem, consciously aligned, to promote and scale African Businesses. Technology is an enabler and people are the creators, to realise a highly futuristic vision where more women enter and succeed as economic contributors. The growth of this movement has been phenomenal and evidence of the movement's work was and is still evident in projects such as Bring back our girls; fees must fall and No to Xenophobia to mention a few.
As a network, ECAfrica is coming together to create support for distressed #SMMEs and Entrepreneurs as our skill sets traverse across all sectors and collectively we can help by using technology to solve problems through networking; job creation; skills development and at the same time building social cohesion.
“The campaign we put together is a response to appeal to South Africa for help to keep us in business by buying our services and products and re-think their buying patterns.” says Vanessa Perumal, Managing Director of JT Communication Solutions and architect of the #ECAfrica movement. Perumal continues, "Through the collective strength of our network, #ECAfrica is also creating a support structure to offer a short term, humane response to help desperate entrepreneurs with Food, Medical, and Data Vouchers."
The #ECAfrica network is for entrepreneurs, by entrepreneurs and together considers how we can create support for distressed #SMMEs and Entrepreneurs, to heed the call to action to support our country at its most vulnerable.
"Essentially we wanted to make sure we support a campaign that falls within the rules of the Governments National #LockDownSA call to action and looking at how we can offer meaningful support. We are calling for support in two ways. If you are an entrepreneur and highly vulnerable, please send your details and if you can contribute to the campaign, we would like to hear from you," says OS Holdings CEO, Nomsa Nteleko, who is part of the #ECAfrica movement.
The pandemic is causing global stresses on markets and even causing the crashing of some market sectors and forcing businesses to rethink their operations during our #21daysofLockDownSA. We intend to demonstrate product and service readiness to support SOE, private and public sectors with business solutions. Says Irisha Luhanga of Redefine Human Capital ‘Over the next #21DaysLockDownSA the #ECAfricaNetwork will be sharing and also offering Business Master Classes, offering Legal Advise, Coaching, LinkedIn Live, Instagram, Stories, What’s app, Blogs, one-on-one sessions, Zoom hangouts etc.

A women-led company founded to give schoolgirls access to affordable sanitary wear has grown into a scalable social enterprise that aims to positively impact the lives of women and girls throughout the African continent.
Nandi Pads was founded out of disbelief and anger that South African girls are missing school due to a lack of access to sanitary pads. But, unlike the short-term and sometimes erratic interventions of donations, Nandi Pads is a NPO that offers a holistic and sustainable solution to the “period poverty” facing girls who drop out or fail to get the marks they are capable of because of missing school.
“Nandi Pads was started to address the problem of menstruation related absenteeism in schoolgirls,” says co-founder Jovana Korac. “When I heard about the problem in 2009 I was absolutely outraged that, in the 21st century, young girls were being left out of the education system simply because of a biological process that affects fifty percent of the population. I thought it was unheard of that young girls could not access education – the one thing that could potentially get them out of poverty – because they could not access affordable sanitary pads.
“With Nandi Pads we have created a sustainable solution that not only impacts the lives of the school girls but also provides income streams for women in disadvantaged communities.”
Nandi Pads emerged out of Kgoshigadi, an initiative that was originally started by Tebogo Motubatse in Soshanguve. Initially working as a donation model, it now has a new name and has grown into a holistic, homegrown solution that is based on stringent quality control and a distribution process managed entirely by women, using only local suppliers. Nandi Pads are high quality and affordable - and locally produced in a South African facility.
To date, Nandi Pads has supported 3,500 girls at 15 schools with over 200,000 sanitary pads. These are accompanied by health discussions and inspirational talks for the schoolgirls. In addition, Nandi Pad’s unique business-in-a-box sales method has upskilled women entrepreneurs and allowed them to generate a regular income for themselves and their families.
Nandi Pads is the fourth project to receive funding from a new social impact initiative that has brought together JT Communication Solutions, a Johannesburg-based, 100% black owned media agency, and the global Mindshare media agency.
“We are thrilled to be recognised as a potential changemaker on the continent by JT Comms and Mindshare,” says Korac. “Getting the word out about Nandi Pads will change lives, in a meaningful and sustained manner – and will help with our aim of expanding our social impact business model into other African countries.”
There are multiple ways that supporters can get involved with Nandi Pads:
Nandi Pads is aiming to be one hundred percent biodegradable in the near future while the NPO is also planning a Kgoshigadi bursary scheme for children of the women entrepreneurs who are taking the business model forward. “Kgoshigadi means ‘Queen’ in sePedi and Nandi was Shaka Zulu’s mom and a warrior queen herself – and we are always taking this spirit forward in whatever we do,” concludes Korac.

An exciting partnership paves a way for young South African scholars to study on the Continent.
Through its groundbreaking strategic partnership brokered with the Nedbank Eyethu Community Trust in June 2017, the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) has initiated a Call for applications for South African students who wish to pursue post graduate studies in selected African Universities outside of South Africa.
MINDS offers scholarships to young Africans who wish to pursue post-graduate studies within Africa in any field of study at Honours or Master’s degree level. Through tailored leadership development activities, the MINDS Scholarship Programme aims to nurture leaders who have a continental development mindset, leaders who will facilitate greater cohesion and cooperation between African countries. The program aims to develop Pan-African leaders with a lived understanding and experience of the continent, who can in turn facilitate for economic integration and social cohesion. The scholarships target young Africans with demonstrated leadership track records and commitment to using their knowledge and skills to better their community.
MINDS is a Pan African institute committed to addressing the challenges affecting democratic governance, strengthening African institutions, and seeking new and progressive ways to promote transformative economic development in Africa.
MINDS holds the view that greater integration and cohesion on the continent are essential conditions for Africa’s development.
The scholarship programme has a leadership development programme component (LDP) component that every scholar is expected to participate in. MINDS hosted the inaugural workshop in August 2019 with its first cohort of scholars. Mrs Machel, the Executive Chair of MINDS emphasised the importance of development. “We call this leadership development and it is intentional that we call it development. It is a process of developing qualities for good leadership.”
Sinesipho Ralarala, one of the recipients says, “The MINDS scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to study towards a Master of Laws at Strathmore University. I have been in Kenya for a year now. The thought of living so far away from my home of South Africa was daunting, but when I arrived in Kenya, it was a smooth transition. This is because of how friendly the locals are and how willing they are to integrate outsiders into their culture. I soon realized that despite cultural differences, Africans are similar in many ways.”
Jacob Makgato, a student at African Leadership University, School of Business (ALUSB) in Kigali, Rwanda shares, “MINDS is creating opportunities for young Africans to pursue further studies, and has helped me pursue my MBA. I would not be able to if it was not for MINDS. I encourage everyone to apply for the MINDS Scholarships. Studying outside of my country has exposed me to opportunities on the continent, and has given me insights into how other African countries operate and conduct business.”

Thabang Primary SGB takes initiative to solve unemployment for their school’s unemployed parents in Dobsonville through skills development and entrepreneurship.
With unemployment reaching crisis proportions in a county at war with itself, it’s encouraging to see how unemployed parents are tapping into their skills to create a shift to offset the escalating crisis.
Thabang Primary SGB is taking on the unemployment crisis head on and is on a mission to provide solutions that create opportunities for the parents of the school to learn skills and create a revenue stream.
Thanks to a partnership with Sari for change which is a social economic enterprise, Thabang Primary hits the 2020 school year with a focused plan to create opportunities for at least 20 parents set to start a skills training incubation hub at the school.
Chairperson of Thabang Primary SGB, Shadi Mogole has rolled up her sleeves to offer training in sewing and uniform making. With the high rate of unemployment, Shadi felt that the confidence and participation from parents were at an all time low
What started off as a beading workshop agreed between the principal of the school and Rayana Edwards, a business leader of Partners for Possibility and founder of Sari For Change in June 2019, is turning out to be a fully fledged manufacturing hub for more than 20 unemployed women in 2020.
As entrepreneurs in Sari For Change’s network rallied together after the beading workshop, they were able to purchase a sewing machine and over locker with the idea of uniform making and to provide manufacturing of fashion products.
Mom of Two, Shadi saw the opportunity to take ownership of a project that could yield returns on their labour and newly learned skills through partnerships. This offered parents a more engaged presence at the school, access to develop skills and an opportunity to earn whilst being in proximity to their kids at the school. Thanks to Sari for Change who offered Shadi, a retainer for volunteering to teach basic skills as she worked in clothing production in her previous employment. The ladies quickly pushed for more hand beading classes and slowly started earning off their labour by making basic bags for Sari For Change to be used as packaging.
To move forward the hub is in need of sewing machines, over lockers to cater for the class of 2020 training programme starting the end of January. This manufacturing hub based at the school proves that with dedication and a shared vision, the ills of our communities can be tackled with meaningful collaborations.
JT Comms with their EC Africa network of entrepreneurs have also joined the call of sharing the Thabang Primary school’s story by providing much needed PR.
Shadi and her ladies aim to produce uniforms, tracksuits and sportswear for Thabang Primary and the surrounding schools. In reaching their goal of producing thousands of uniforms whilst utilizing the school spaces, they are leading the way in communities feeding into entrepreneurship and strengthening the relationships between the SGB, the teachers and the students.
As this is a non paying school, the kids are provided with one meal a day. The success of this hub can restore the dignity to a mom who will afford a packed lunch for her child.
“Our aim was to help our parents as this in turn helps our learners. These parents are been given a skill that cannot be taken from them and they will show the community what can be achieved.
We will need extra sewing machines, saris, cotton and a basic training kit for all of the women who will be joining the project.” said Bertha Ramantsi school principal of Thabang Primary
Although the intention is to impact unemployment, we want to ensure that volunteers can also give of their time by coming forward and teaching a skill to these parents to further equip them.
“We would be honoured to have others join this journey of impacting this sharing economy through donating fabrics, sewing machines , help fund this training centre or partnering with us in entrepreneur training and business workshops. This is based on the power of collaboration and we welcome all those who want to play a role in our sharing economy.” says Rayana Edwards

About Sari for Change
Sari for Change is the brainchild of fashion designer and change agent, Rayana Edwards, who wanted to do more than just give birth to a new fashion line. With 28 years in the fashion industry and drawing on her travels in the Middle East and various African countries, Rayana realised that the secret to any new idea is to have a unique selling point. Rayana identified the Sari as a fabric resource and the opportunity to repurpose the six metres of fabric. Her initial call for saris was made through the Art of Living, a foundation by the Indian spiritualist Sri Sri Shanker. Members were asked to contribute their saris to this development initiative that could uplift others out of poverty in South Africa. From that beginning, Sari for Change has grown into a project that’s a unique fashion business as well as training and mentoring programme.

The family of Mampho Motsomi and her colleagues at MNS Attorneys, are appealing to be afforded space to grieve the loss of senior associate attorney, Mampho Motsomi, who died on Wednesday night, 22 January 2020, after being stabbed multiple times.
“This is a tragic loss,” said MNS chairman Mncedisi Ndlovu. “Mampho’s family and our firm have been deeply affected by her death and we ask to be given space to mourn Mampho’s passing in privacy”.
“All of us who were close to Mampho know what she meant to us as a colleague, a friend or a family member, and we are focused on cherishing her contribution to our lives and to the society she lived and worked in”.
Ndlovu added: “We jointly, as family and employer, condemn the action of the person who was responsible for her untimely passing, and all those who stoop to gender-based violence”.
At MNS, we will remember Mampho as a kind, intelligent and generous human being. She was one of our most talented attorneys, who was well-placed to play a leading role in the legal fraternity. Sadly, that is not to be.
We are pleased to note that a police investigation is already underway. The family and MNS trust that there will be a speedy judicial process to ensure accountability and justice.
“As a firm, we are devastated by the loss, and share our condolences with the family.”

Defying the odds and breaking new ground through a new movement called #ECAfrica100 goes live today using digital media platforms as the opportunity to share African business stories
South African Visionary Vanessa Perumal through collaboration in business networks is innovating, breaking new ground and filling a much needed gap to amplify and market African businesses looking to find new markets, connect to clients and use the power of technology to scale business.
Using Digital Disruption JT Comms the company started by Perumal goes live with a Global Platform for African Businesses Through #ECAfrica100 which stands for Entrepreneur Connect Africa.
With unemployment catapulting, #ECAfrica100 is about doing business unusual to propel job creation through economic transformation and accelerate penetration into new markets.
Using technology as a disruptor to consciously drive conversations that entrepreneurial collaboration, innovation and trade; drives this groundbreaking digital TV platform which launches simultaneously in South Africa, Congo, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
Media and communications expert Vanessa Perumal is taking her innovative practice in the field to the next level. Her company, JT Communication Solutions, renowned for delivering creative entrepreneurs to the marketplace, she has now has now successfully launched several media platforms including a podcast series called #ECAfrica100 on Africa Business Radio which goes live on 11 February 2019.
Entrepreneur Connect Africa (#ECAfrica100) facilitates collaboration and exposure for African businesses to global markets. Perumal is an activist whose professional roots are in arts , business journalism and social justice.
“I’m excited that we can pioneer and use the power of digital to tell our own stories. Finding 100 Entrepreneurs many of whom are unsung traders who seldom get media coverage, so desperate for market access and more Public Relations and marketing should not be this hard to fix. To be able to solve problems in collaborative business markets is the game-change and puts us at the cutting edge of using our business networks to create sustainable business models,’ says Perumal.
As an African mom, she recognised that it is possible to do what one loves while looking after her loved ones. She exchanged her journalism career for professional communications consultancy. This was despite being a woman of colour in South Africa where, although opportunities exist in principle, realising one’s aspirations to contribute to real social change is often stymied by bureaucracy and racial and gender politics. This is not unique to the country.
“When I realised entrepreneurship was the opportunity, I dived in. My kids were young and starting JT Comms 15 years ago solved my problem (the ‘competing’ demands of career and family). That I was able to create an income stream was a double whammy! To think I could solve global problems doing what I love makes the move worth it.”
Vanessa Perumal’s practice is driven by transformation and change. It is therefore not surprising that JT Communications Solutions is leading in disrupting the way in which content is delivered to consumers, enabling entrepreneurs to gain access to markets in ways that were previously unimaginable.
However, she is a realistic visionary, noting that entrepreneurship “is situational but cash flow related, it is also about solving your own personal financial needs but when you are a social entrepreneur, I reckon it is innate. Social entrepreneurship is about making an impact for the greater good, whether it is for the environment, humanity or a cause. That is why the saying “those that think they can change the world usually do” is right”.
The #ECAfrica100 series facilitates business conversations of international importance by profiling and promoting entrepreneurial stories in order to highlight the importance of dialogue around issues of entrepreneurship in Africa on a global scale. Africa is the source of the hardware that builds technology (inclusively for your many gadgets such as your Smartphone, coffee, tea, food and flowers) and African entrepreneurs can provide the solutions to the continent’s economic challenges.
#ECAfrica100 will go live from 11 February 2019 on diverse digital and traditional media platforms which include Viva Nation TV, Africa Business Radio, WeTalkBiz, and Tropics Magazine from January 2019.

About JT Comms
JT COMMUNICATION SOLUTIONS is a dynamic, 100% black owned media agency established in 2004, rooted in Africa with a global reach. The agency’s core business offering includes media relations, publicity, communications, reputation management, crisis communication, event and marketing solutions amongst others.
JT Comms continues to constantly evolve, remain organic and successfully scale its operations to a 360-degree digital agency and is a conduit in producing effective and relevant African content that’s definitive and packaged for digital penetration. The agency has launched new innovations such as hosting “Business Master Classes” and launching an online TV station, which hosts diverse projects such as ECAfrica, Bunnies in the Burbs and Amplifying African Excellence. JT Comms significantly differentiates itself from its competitors by being relevant and providing tailored solutions and a resource for media players in sourcing African content.
The construction of a community-driven library in the Eastern Cape is one step closer to completion after a funding boost from a social impact initiative launched in 2019.
The roof of the Novulakuvaliwe Community Library, situated in Lusikisiki, is currently being completed, following a significant contribution from JT Comms, powered by Mindshare. This is one of the projects to receive funding from a new social impact initiative that has brought together JT Communication Solutions, a Johannesburg-based, 100% black owned media agency, and the global Mindshare media agency.
The library is a project of Nomkhubulwane Development Projects, an NPO based in the village of Mzizangwa. The NPO is fiercely committed to a development agenda that seeks to empower the rural community in which it exists - and provide sustainable development in areas such as in education, skills development, arts and culture.
With leadership from co-directors Zanele Ndlovu, Unathi Magubeni and Nosiphiwo Magubeni, Nomkhubulwane Development Projects is an outstanding example of South Africans themselves tackling the challenges and problems that face so many communities. The Novulakuvaliwe Community Library also provides a lesson in the passion that can drive community projects towards sustained impact: instead of waiting for a lumpsum cash injection, the team took an incremental approach to the building of the library, in order to get the work moving. Construction began on 20th September 2019, with contributions and donations from a network of friends and associates.
“We are motivated to play our role in rural development, especially in the community in which we exist,” says Ndlovu. “We realise that rural areas are being left behind in terms of development and there is a generation of children whose future is handicapped just because of the area they are born in, and our conscious couldn't let the status quo remain as such. We would like to make our contribution and hopefully inspire others to put much more focus on rural development.”
The Novulakuvaliwe Community Library will focus on two areas of underdevelopment in the rural community that it will serve - education and skills development. This is through an intervention that can start at the early childhood development phase in order to nurture the development of children. It is also a community-driven intervention that can provide library services and assist school going learners in their quest for knowledge - and provide skills development workshops to the unemployed and interested individuals.
Once complete, the library will be a centre for knowledge and research for the learners of Gwexintaba, Magwa, Mzizangwa and Goso Primary School and the community at large. The Novulakuvaliwe Community Library is prioritising fiction and non-fiction written in Xhosa so that the community can initially interact with books in their mother tongue. The books will cater for foundation phase learners, primary and secondary school learners, and also accommodate adult readers.
As part of the NPO’s belief in the power of partnerships of all sizes, Nomkhubulwane Development Projects has already secured books from the National Library of South Africa which will be delivered on completion of the library building structure. Book donations have also come from National Book Week (a South African Book Development Council initiative) and publisher, Jacana Media. In addition, the team will work with a librarian based at UNISA in establishing the library while the local office of the Library and Information Association of South African will assist with further insights into establishing and operating a library.
Along with the completion of the roof, January also saw donations for the construction of shelves. The next step is the plastering of the walls, ceiling material, painting of the walls and electrification of the building.
A new crowd-funding campaign has also been launched, to enable South Africans to get involved. Donations of over R1000 will be engraved on a plaque that will be placed on the wall by the entrance. You can donate here https://www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/community-library
“We have a team of capable and dedicated change agents who are passionate in empowering the rural community in which we exist,” concludes Ndlovu. “We are confident that this initiative will not only contribute now but also to future generations.”

The Parks Netball team has become a powerful example of community empowerment and excellence through sport – and this inspirational team of women is poised to have even more impact in 2020.
This week the team was presented with kit and other equipment bearing their brand new logo and has launched its own Facebook page, showcasing the team’s professional look and commitment to “creating community through netball”.
In creating its own branding and media presence, The Parks Netball is being supported by JT Communication Solutions, powered by Mindshare and ECAfrica.
“We are really happy to have partners to help us tell our story and take The Parks Netball to new levels of achievement,” says Grace Matoni who co- founded the team in 2018.
"'In a country that is desperate to have citizens arrive and solve South Africa's problem and role-model solutions that can create a shift in our how can empower our communities is fast tracked through the example The Parks Netball team is setting. We are delighted to throw the full weight of our media agency and showcase the power of digital disruption in telling positive stories that spiral actions', says Managing Director of JT Comms no stranger to using her platforms as a social entrepreneur to drive change.
The Parks Netball is primarily comprised of domestic workers working in The Parks area of Johannesburg. In recent months it has grown to include several professional women who are drawn to its commitment to the game of netball- and the deep sense of connection it provides.
“From our small beginnings we have built The Parks Netball team into one that has started playing games against other teams, and attracts more and more women from the area,” says Matoni.
The Parks Netball team’s commitment to excellence is visible in its daily practises at Parkhurst Primary School and the twice weekly coaching sessions that are honing the team’s skills and fitness. Although in a fulltime job and with her own many netball league commitments, Gabisile Dladla has signed on as the team’s coach. It didn’t take much persuading for Dladla to come on board: her mom who sadly passed on was also a domestic worker; Dladla attended Parkhurst Primary School and is an example of excellence herself.
“It has been amazing to see the team’s skill and fitness levels improve,” says Dladla. “When I first started coaching them, they were unfit and in the beginning we only organised games against players their age. But the team has become so good they are playing against youngsters and winning! Next year we are really looking at entering The Parks Netball team into a proper league and so the support we’re getting in terms of our kit and branding is really important.”
Dladla says alongside coming together for the love of netball, the team is also about community. “A bond of sisterhood has been formed and I’ve seen how it changes everyone’s moods when we come together, instead of staying at home after a long day’s work.”
Matoni is a Ward 117 committee member and she got the inspiration for starting the team after reading about a netball team that was playing at nearby Zoo Lake. “By God's grace we were having a ward committee meeting that evening so I shared my love of sport and asked how we could best form a team that would see domestic workers like me exercising after work,” she explains with her two colleagues Bulelwa Malanti and Thembi Mbhekeni
Sharing the idea with Bulelwa Malanti and Thembi Mbhekeni added further impetus to Matoni’splans. (Malanti had been involved in sport in Cape Town where she’s originally from and together the three women formed the basis of The Parks Netball team. With support from employers and the local community, the team was able to get underway.
Ward councillor Tim Truluck also gave his support for the project - with the final piece of the plan falling into place when Parkhurst Primary School agreed that the team could use its facilities for practise. The school’s principle Mr S. D. Maharaj was instrumental in connecting the team to Dladla as a coach.
Among the highlights of 2019 was participating in a tournament in Soweto at the end of September. The Parks Netball team came second, returning home with a trophy and medals – and a sense of their potential as part of a formal netball league.
“Netball has giving us a way to keep fit and healthy while also having fun,” concludes Matoni. “We do enjoy ourselves so much and we have become sisters. We are looking forward to seeing how we can grow and develop our team in 2020 and would like to thank everyone who has assisted us so far. To end the year with our own kit, logo and place to share our story is truly wonderful.”

If you’re looking for a way to contribute to the poverty-alleviation possibilities of the sharing economy this festive season - and beyond – then the Sari for Change project offers an uplifting, beautiful and impactful way to get involved.
Founded by Rayana Edwards in 2014, this initiative has grown from an initial call for the donation of unused saris for up-cycling into new garments into a skills development and entrepreneurial project with the ability to scale as it lifts people out of poverty.
The impact of Sari for Change is visible in the steady income it has provided for the women who have been up-skilled to produce garments out of its dedicated workshop in Northriding in Johannesburg. It is also apparent in the recent initiation of a training hub in Dobsonville (Johannesburg) where six women are currently being trained to join Sari for Change’s fashion line production.
Sari for Change has also partnered with the Laudium Women's Network in the collection of high-end saris and as a way of expanding the project’s sales and marketing network. Sari for Change is further building a network of independent garment makers who use their training to work out of their homes - and recently began collaborating with Khulekani Kenneth of Negus, a Durban designer who has started a men's range from the saris sent to him.
“Although our garments are beautiful and highly covetable for their unique African, Arabic and Indian aesthetics, we are aspiring for more than simply an ethical, sustainable fashion product,” says Edwards. “Sari for Change is providing an important service through training women in business skills and needlecraft to enable them to create their own employment. These women either become entrepreneurs, sole proprietors, suppliers of skills or distributors in our value chain. In this way, Sari for Change is about selling consciousness, connectivity and continuity''.
Sari for Change comes against the background of a global shift against hyper-consumerism and the desire by an increasing number of individuals to do what they can to reduce income inequality. One way of doing this is through supporting the shared economy – one that is built on community connections, the facilitation of collaboration and sharing of resources.
As part of what Edwards also calls a “sacred economy”, women from all over the world – primarily in India - contribute their gently worn saris or family heirlooms to women in South Africa. The journey of the sari continues once they arrive at Sari for Change: the saris are firstly sorted and cleaned and then the sari fabric is identified to determine the specific new garment it will become.
Women participating in this product creation are taught pattern making and completion of a garment with strict quality controls in check. Through mentorship and help in participating in business skills development and entrepreneur programmes, these women are journeying to become self-sufficient by eventually moving out of the project and becoming suppliers to Sari for Change and business owners in their own right.
Already this community-centred approach is attracting more participants. In 2020, Sari for Change is aiming to accommodate 20 more women in its Dobsonville training facility.
“We will need extra sewing machines, saris, cotton and a basic training kit for all of the women who will be joining us next year and so are making an appeal for assistance with this,” explains Edwards.
Although its intention is to impact unemployment and the inequality that persists in South Africa, Sari for Change is also gaining a reputation in the world of fashion. The project is recognised as a creator of beautiful garments that are made in a genuinely transparent, sustainable and non-fast fashion environment – and which creates a circle of meaningful interaction between the women who contribute their saris, the women who turn them into garments wearable in all cultures and the world of fashion.
Sari for Change has already walked two international fashion weeks - one with acclaimed South African fashion designer Thula Sindi at Paris Fashion Week and the second with SACRED (Sweden) at Italy’s Torino Fashion Week. These amply demonstrate the project’s ability to move into new markets - and link South African to the rest of the world.
“We really are a fashion brand with a purpose that is bringing together women who are aligned to a common vision,” concludes Edwards. “We would be honoured to have others join our journey through donating their saris and other fabrics, buying our garments, helping fund our training centre or partnering with us in entrepreneur training and business workshops. Sari for Change is based on the power of collaboration and we welcome all those who want to play a role in our sacred economy.”

Globally revered South African music icon, Abdullah Ibrahim, is embarking on a two city benefit concert for the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library (TMPL).
Ibrahim will be supported by Ekaya for the shows taking place at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg on November 27th and Life Church Seapoint in Cape Town on November 29th. The concerts are being described as the confluence of Africa’s greatest minds and struggle icons. “For us, the contribution of the arts was very important. It was not prescribed by anybody; there was no political party saying you must compose a song,” commented President Mbeki. “It was just the artists being themselves and a very strong sense of identity came from that.”
President Mbeki said he “was not surprised when Abdullah said he’d support the TMPL through these concerts”. The Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library (TMPL) has been conceived as an African centre of excellence in learning, research and discourse for the transformation of Africa. The benefit concerts are also being supported by MNS Attorneys – one of South Africa’s leading black-owned law firms.
“Our commitment to black excellence and independence is reflected in the aims of the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library and also in Abdullah Ibrahim’s exceptional and extraordinary career,” said Mncedisi Ndlovu, Chairman and co-founder of MNS Attorneys. “We are thrilled to be able to help support these benefit concerts for the TMPL.”
Stemming from a partnership between the University of South Africa (Unisa) and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library (TMPL) is a repository of the documents, papers and artefacts of former President Thabo Mbeki. The TMPL aims to become a living library - one which focuses not only on Mbeki’s life and times, but also on the larger context of a rapidly changing continent. As part of this, the library will also contain the papers of many African leaders which would normally be held at different repositories.
The opportunity to see Ibrahim with Ekaya at this two city benefit concert is unmissable for South African music aficionados - especially in a year in which Ibrahim has released a new album with the band, his first in four years.
Titled The Balance and released late June, the album was recorded over the course of a day in London at RAK Studios in November 2018. Featuring a number of full band arrangements, The Balance also includes several solo improvised piano pieces and is released by analogue specialists Gearbox Records.
Encompassing Township-Jazz, solo piano, highlife and plentiful modern jazz styles, the instrumentation on The Balance is broad and includes harmonica, cello, and piccolo.
“With Ekaya, I am blessed in that I have all these textural opportunities,” Ibrahim said of the record. He added, “We push ourselves out of our comfort zones. So that we can present to the listener our striving for excellence. So that we can engage with our listeners without any barriers of our ego. It’s not jazz. For us, it’s a process of transcending barriers. Technically it’s very, very skilled, but there’s simplicity in the complexity so that people can relate to it. It’s a natural rhythm of the universe. We’ve been looking at recording for some time. But we were looking for the correct vehicle. Someone who understands what we’re doing.”
Abdullah was recently received into the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters fellowship, the highest honour the United States bestows upon jazz musicians. (Watch the mini-documentary NEA Jazz Masters: Tribute: To Abdullah Ibrahim here).

Limpopo: Famed for its scenic beauty, dramatic mountains and rich culture Limpopo province is fast-growing into a tourism Mecca. Lephalale (or Ellisras) a coal mining town in Limpopo east of the Waterberg Coalfield, will be host to Limpopo region’s first ever 67 CEOs Foundation Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) an annual Global event which takes place in November. This year marks 12 years of the movement helping millions of people through local, national and global events and activities to unleash their ideas to start and scale new businesses.
67CEOs Foundation strategically has chosen Mogol Club, Lephalale, in Limpopo Province to host the regions inaugural GEW two day conference taking place on 12 and 13 November, under the theme "Advancing Market Access”. The fully booked free two day conference will host dynamic conversations, offer strategic platforms to create networking opportunities for Entrepreneurs and drive business to business access and will be opened by Executive Mayor of Lephalale Municipality Jack Moloko Maeko.
The theme was selected as a result of disruptive innovations which are transforming Africa’s economic potential, creating new target markets and unprecedented consumer choice. Capitalising on these potential opportunities requires complete reconsideration of customer engagement and business development strategies, which need to focus on how Small, Medium & Micro Enterprise Businesses (SMMEs) can ride the wave.
Dr Jason Musyoka - Business Leadership, Consultant and Associate Researcher with Samketsi Consulting will deliver a key note address on Advancing Markets for SMME's. Marang Marekimane, Founder of Business Process Mechanic will host a master class on Digitial Technology to gain Market Access and Anita Jack - Material Developer, (SABS) will offer a master class on Product Standardisation, Testing and Certification - Market Access Readiness. In addition panel discussions, business pitches and business expertise will unpack opportunities and provide critical mastery for SME's.
The National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 advocates for stronger public and private sector resourcing and investment in the country’s SMMEs. Complexity of standards and compliance pose difficulties to rural and local SMMEs access to market. 67CEOs GEW2019 sponsored by Exxaro Resources will see the convergence of relevant stakeholders offering their expertise and network in the spirit of advancing access to markets for SMMEs.
One of the key focus areas for this year’s GEW2019 by 67CEOs is how South African SMMEs can benefit immensely from African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which aims to create a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business persons and investments, thus paving the way for accelerating the establishment of the Customs Union. The GEW2019 is a great platform for SMMEs to highlight beneficiation according to NPD 2030 and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act.
AfCFTA is also expected to enhance competitiveness at the industry and enterprise level through exploitation of opportunities to scale production, for continental market access and better reallocation of resources.
We strongly believe that SMMEs have the potential to create more jobs, continue to contribute to local and national economic growth when adequately supported through public-private partnerships (PPP) and actively take advantage of continental policy and technology development to accelerate access to markets.
67CEOs GEW2019 will bring together a diverse group of people to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and learn from each other’s successes and failures. About 67CEOs
At 67CEOs™ Foundation NPC (2018/343943/08), we Inspire Possibility Thinking in young people. We convene CEOs to mentor, educate, inspire and invest in young people, startup entrepreneurs and SMMEs. CEOs volunteer their time, expertise and resources as a form of their individual social responsibilities through active participation in our programmes. Our programmes are educational, socio-economic and enterprise development inclined.
Our Vision
To achieve massive inclusion of young entrepreneurs into the mainstream economy through mentorship, entrepreneurship education and enterprise development programmes.
South Africa, The Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) happens once a year in November, and this year marks 12 years of helping millions of people through local, national and global events and activities to unleash their ideas to start and scale new businesses.
67CEOs Foundation will this year host its 3rd annual Global Entrepreneurship Week, under the theme "Advancing Market Access”.
Entrepreneurs helping entrepreneurs, giving newcomers a roadmap to navigate the complex ecosystem of access to markets, funding, talent and building a business, along with an invaluable network of a community of support as characterised by previous GEWs.

Even in infancy, #Women4Cyber is strongly asserting its leadership and making waves thanks to the efforts of the collaborative platform initiated by the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) who started the platform in November 2018.
#Women4Cyber is a collaborative effort to amplify and accelerate the under representation of European women in the development and promotion of European Cyber Security. Globally unconfirmed research puts the number of women in #CyberSecurity at under 20%. This backlog remains both a hinderance to balance gender equity and an opportunity for Women in the Business of Cyber Security to aggressively tap into filling the gaps in the markets
Winning the 2019 Cyber Security Nordic award is a significant step which aims to increase awareness and attractiveness of the cyber security industry also among women.
We caught up with Ms Nina Hyvärinen, an advisory board member of Women 4 Cyber for an exclusive interview. Ms Nina Hyvärinen is also the head of Corporate relations at F-Secure Corporation.
ECAfrica: You are on the Advisory Board of #Women4Cyber – how did the initiative come about?
It all started about two years ago, when European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) started to look, how Europe can respond to the growing need for cyber security professionals. It is estimated that Europe will need 350.000 cyber security experts by 2022. In 2017 only 11% of cyber security workforce were women. This is too low. There is a huge untapped potential in women to help to fill the skills gap. During those discussions we realized that we need to take additional measures to make cyber security attractive to women, and support them enter this field.
ECAfrica: What does the Cyber Security Nordic award mean?
NH: The award is of huge importance for us. W4C is a fairly new initiative. The award gives us valuable visibility, and more importantly to women in cyber security, and important resources for us to start implementing the concrete actions.
ECAfrica: What impact does #Women4 Cyber intend making?
NH: We want to be instrumental in supporting women and be the community and network women want to belong to. We want to see more women as leaders and experts in cyber security organizations. We want to see more women as key note speakers in major events and conferences (like Cyber Security Nordic), and have role models for young women to attract them to cyber security career. We want to develop and implement concrete actions that support education, training and career opportunities for women, and thus pave the way to cyber security.
ECAfrica: You Mentioned that there is gap in the European Market for women in Tech ( tell us about this and what is your intervention strategy) ?
NH: Tech world is still a man’s world. There are only about 24% women in the cyber security work force (more widely interpreted than in 2017, hence a higher figure). The big tech companies have only 20 - 25% women in tech jobs. Also, we are going to need 350.000 cyber security professionals by 2022 in Europe. W4C wants to raise awareness among women and give them role models in cyber security (inspiring speakers, interviews etc.), and for example, initiate discussion with human resources and recruiters so that they would look at wider skills set.
ECAfrica: To fill this gap what are you opportunities if at all for Women in Africa to fill this gap?
NH: It is estimated that globally we need 1,8 million cyber security professionals, and even as high as 3,5 million. Women in Africa have a real opportunity here. Also as Africa is also getting more and more digital, you have the opportunity to do it right from the beginning from security point of view. We hope we can also support you to encourage women in Africa to consider tech jobs and opportunities digitalization can bring.
ECAfrica: Do you have an inclusive global Strategy?
NH: International partnerships and network are key part of our action plan and we are excited for any opportunities to reach out to other regions like Africa. We want to be part of a global community and network.
ECAfrica: Please advise on opportunities you have identified?
Is there a specific profile of women in Cyber resource you need or is it across sectors?
NH: In addition to more traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) we need also other skills like behavioral and social scientists. Also most in the cyber security did not start their career here (neither did I), and we need to encourage women and train and educate them to consider cyber security as a next career move.
Cyber security is a crucial part of digitalization. We need a wide representation and understanding of society and different sectors. We have more women working in social and health sector. I cannot think more sensitive data than health data, hence it is important that women working in the health sector understand the importance of securing patients data, and what it takes.
