The evocative installation "Conversations with a Dead Piano", created from old piano parts, opens on August 17th at the National School of the Arts.

Guided by visual artist Usha Seejarim, renowned internationally for her reinterpretation of ordinary objects, the NSA Grade 11 learners have crafted remarkable individual and group work using the keys, hammers, dampers, coils, felt and strings from old, irreparable "dead" pianos as their creative palette. The NSA was privileged to have Usha Seejarim as an Artist in Residence at the school in early 2023 in a program funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme supported by the DSAC. As a School of Specialisation in Performing and Creative Arts, the NSA prides itself on offering learners the opportunity of working with industry leaders on unique projects. The exchange inspires creativity and provides access to the expansive professional viewpoint of a practising professional artist.

The brief was to create a transformative artwork using "dead pianos". The installation is in the atrium foyer at the entrance to the school, where suffused light changes the dynamic of the work throughout the day.

Contrary to some popular belief, an average piano does not improve with age despite the apparent beauty and aesthetic of the wooden casing. A piano is a machine, and machines reach a sell-by date reaching a point where they do not play as they once did. A piano's purpose lies in bringing through the vibration of music. A piano key is considered "dead" when it does not make a sound when struck. After a lifetime of service to music, or perhaps a lifetime of neglect, there is an undeniable redemption and beauty in transforming these instruments rather than letting them decay in a landfill or go up in smoke. Through the sacred transformative power of art, these dead pianos have been reborn into a new art form where they will continue to echo a vibration of beauty and creativity, safely airborne within the space of the NSA.

The installation will open on 17th August at 18h00. Usha Seejarim will provide the "keynote" address and discuss the creative process. Supporting the installation will be the premiere of five selected original compositions inspired by the creative brief Compositions for a Dead Piano. These works were developed under the expert guidance of Chesney Palmer, NSA alum, PhD student, piano teacher, composer and assistant lecturer, during a workshop held during the winter holiday. The five learners whose compositions will be featured are Grade twelve learners Tumelo Sungululu, twins Zoe and Zita Gangaram, and Grade 11 learners Marcus Johnson and Bienvenu Muyombo.

The audience will also be treated to the premiere of Chesney Palmer's original piece inspired by the idea of a conversation with a dead piano. "The composition narrates the story of this dead piano from the afterlife, reflecting on the decline of humanity and the immortalising power of music to both remember and reflect on deeper issues," commented Palmer.

All compositions will be performed by the multi-award-winning pianist William Earl, the NSA's official music department accompanist.

The opening of the installation will be a ticketed event to raise funds for the art department at R100 a ticket which will include entry into a lucky draw. Patrons can buy physical tickets from the Marketing & Development House, through shop@artschool.co.za or at the venue on the 17th August.

The installation, along with source material, workbooks, designs and related products, will be open for public viewing daily from 17th August to 1st September from 09:00 – 15:00.

The work will remain in the atrium in the foyer of the NSA for the next 12 months.

Vanessa Perumal, a South African entrepreneur and the founder of JT Communication Solutions, recently had the honour of representing the recipients of the Inaugural National Presidential SMME Awards, JT Communication Solutions won in the category of Best SMME Owned by Persons with Disabilities. She was invited to meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams along with the other winners of the National Presidential Inaugural Awards, at the Union Buildings.

This meeting recognized the outstanding achievements of small and medium-sized businesses and cooperatives in South Africa and highlighted the importance of empowering entrepreneurs from all backgrounds. Perumal’s selection as a representative not only showcases her entrepreneurial success, but also emphasizes the critical role that individuals with disabilities can play in driving economic growth and development.

Despite being a Cancer and Total Laryngectomy survivor and unable to speak without her voice prosthesis, Perumal expressed that her representation of the collective voices highlights the significant progress made by Black South Africans since the fight against apartheid ended, which enabled them to speak freely and aim to achieve their aspirations.

Perumal's tribute to the 29th Freedom Day is a testament to the transformative power of democracy in South Africa. Perumal, who lost her voice to a rare form of cancer and underwent a total laryngectomy, is a role model for cancer survivors and entrepreneurs alike. She spoke about the challenges faced by SMMEs in South Africa, including access to markets and the difficulties posed by monopolies.

Despite the challenges, Perumal and her team at JT Communication Solutions have continued to innovate and pivot in response to changing market conditions. They have embraced digital disruption and created new revenue streams, promoting youth employment in the process.

Perumal's story is an inspiration for all those who face adversity and seek to overcome it through resilience and determination. Her message of hope and entrepreneurship is a reminder that even in the toughest of times, there are opportunities to be found and new pathways to success.

During her presentation at the presidential meeting, Vanessa Perumal emphasized the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in driving economic growth and transformation. She highlighted the achievements of the winners of the National Presidential Awards, who were recognized for their innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. Despite facing numerous challenges, these entrepreneurs demonstrated resilience and determination in pursuing their goals. Perumal’s message of empowerment and collaboration resonated with the audience, and her call to action has inspired many to take an active role in shaping the future of the South African economy.

As Perumal noted in her remarks to President Ramaphosa, "Entrepreneurship is a key driver to solve so much of our problems in our country and to fight to achieve economic transformation, and we are honoured to be recognized for our contribution in growing the ecosystem for entrepreneurs and showcasing a more positive and accurate narrative of the possibilities of aligning synergized networks."

The National Presidential SMME Awards were established by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agencies, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa), and in partnership with the European Union and 22 On Sloane. The awards recognize the achievements of small businesses in South Africa and promote entrepreneurship as a driver of economic growth and social change.

Vanessa Perumal's leadership in championing the importance of changing the African narrative and positioning African voices and stories on a global stage is commendable. Her self-funding of the African Media Resource Centre in 2009 as a gateway to resource African media and promote positive African content is a testament to her commitment to the cause. She also co-founded ECAfrica, a pipeline created to use technology to amplify African entrepreneurship. As the South Africa co-partner of Pan African Venture Capital Impact Hub Adanian Labs, Perumal continues to drive social impact and support African innovation through investment and mentorship.

In addition to her work with various initiatives, Perumal’s focus on using digital media to promote positive African content and drive social impact is noteworthy. Her recent invitation by Afya Rekod, a Pan African health tech disruptor, to be a brand ambassador is a testament to her thought leadership and influence in the African tech industry.

The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agencies, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) hosted the Inaugural National Presidential SMME and Co-operatives Awards.

The awards served as a platform to launch the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) and were hosted in partnership with the Ecosystem Development for Small Enterprises (EDSE), the European Union (EU), Huawei, Google, Telkom and 22 On Sloane.

President Ramaphosa hosted a meeting with the winners of the Inaugural National Presidential SMME and Cooperative Awards at the Union Buildings yesterday (18 April 2023) where he commended their positivity and resilience in the face of various challenges. The winners represented a diverse range of businesses, including Eitaradio, Lotsha Onaka, Borotho Bakery Enterprise, MM Electro Mech Service, Memeza Shout, Kevinot Farming, JT Communication Solutions, Bizcash, SiMODiSA, South African All Brothers Product Certification Body, Ditsogo Engineering, and Browns Food.

Each of the winners were able to share with President Ramaphosa the need to have more support for entrepreneurship and SMME development and the needs of each business. From agricultural land rights to inviting investors to look at how they can mutually develop ecosystems, the winners demonstrated their willingness to be used as a pilot to show the holistic enabling framework for entrepreneurs. The President emphasized that the winners were a specifically chosen cohort from 8000 entries, and their success stories showcase the value that can be brought to South Africa's economy by supporting small businesses.

During the meeting, the president also addressed the challenges that many SMMEs and cooperatives face, such as lack of capital, access to finance, load-shedding, regulatory frameworks, and access to markets. He acknowledged that these challenges are exacerbated by the monopolies that control access to markets and create barriers for entrepreneurs. In addition to these problems, the President agreed with the entrepreneurs that dealing through third parties makes it difficult for entrepreneurs, who are the custodian of their skills, to sustain and improve productivity with so many layers.

The President acknowledged that load shedding is a significant challenge for small businesses and that the government is working tirelessly to find a solution. He outlined the measures being taken, such as the unbundling of Eskom, upgrading the grid, and developing technology to manage power usage. The President also emphasized that intentional support to take these SMMEs forward will allow a pilot of how the enabling systems work, which will not only benefit these businesses but also serve as a blueprint for future growth and success in the small business sector.

The President suggested that the Minister of Small Business Development host a forum later this year where entrepreneurs can come together to tell their stories, showcase their talent and outline their challenges. This positive response from the President indicates that the government is committed to supporting the growth and success of the small business sector in South Africa.

This meeting represents an important step towards addressing the challenges faced by SMMEs and cooperatives in South Africa, and the government's commitment to finding solutions that support their growth and success. The President recognized the need to remove barriers and red tape that impede entrepreneurship and pledged to work closely with SMEs to drive entrepreneurship and create jobs.

‘Being recognized as a winner of the Presidential SMME and Cooperatives Awards is a great honor and a testament to the hard work and dedication we have put into our businesses. We are grateful for the support and recognition from President Ramaphosa and the government, and we look forward to working together to build a more inclusive and supportive ecosystem for small businesses in South Africa,” says Nonopa Tenza – Managing Director of Kevinot Farming

Johannesburg, South Africa - Tribhangi Dance Theatre, under the guidance of Artistic Director Jayesperi Moopen, is pleased to announce their latest production, "Mapping Our Journey." This ground breaking show combines the classical Indian dance form with contemporary dance gestures, resulting in a unique and challenging work that highlights the company's ability to experiment with different genres.

"At Tribhangi Dance Theatre, we pride ourselves on producing compelling storytelling through the diversity of dance and art, enabling humanity to unite," says founder and architect Jayesperi Moopen. "Mapping Our Journey" focuses on the contributions of the Indian diasporic community since the 1860s, and our quest for a shared non-racial national belonging and identity fused in our South Africanness towards a progressive transformation."

The production is a testament to the company's greatest strength - their ability to experiment with different genres and present unique and challenging work. "Elements," an uncompromising, precise work which deliciously melds classical Indian dance values with contemporary dance gesture, is an example of their ability to push boundaries and produce work that remains significant in an ever-changing environment.

"Pivotal events like the Women's March, acknowledging our stalwarts like Biko, Saths Cooper, Strini Moodley, and many other men and women who paved the way for us, reinforce Desmond Tutu's dream of Ubuntu, and Kathrada and Mandela's contribution to a free South Africa to be enjoyed by all," adds Moopen. "There is a need to give expression to define ourselves more greatly in terms of our African identity. An identity that is still in the making as we were given a narrative and need to work through it to create one of our own."

"Mapping Our Journey" is a production that underpins a shared history of suffering and resistance, with the bonds of our hearts, mind, and soul. Tribhangi Dance Theatre's history was formed and continues to be shaped by critical important shifts and movements that define our nation.

"Mapping Our Journey" will be performed at the Lesedi Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex on Thursday, 23rd March 2023 at 7:30 pm, Friday, 24th March 2023 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, 25th March 2023 at 3:00 pm, and Sunday, 26th March 2023 at 3:00 pm.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa 8 March 2023 – In honour of International Women's Day, Entrepreneur Connect Africa (ECAfrica) a movement to amplify entrepreneurship in Africa has announced the launch of #ECAfrica100/2023, a multi-media campaign aimed at supporting and amplifying women's equity in business. The campaign will showcase the achievements of 100 women entrepreneurs in South Africa, creating a platform for them to connect, collaborate, and inspire the next generation of female leaders. ECAfrica aims to provide a pipeline of validated entrepreneurs who are investment ready and willing to partner, ultimately driving economic growth and empowerment for women in Africa.

The #ECAfrica 100 / 2023 campaign will include crafting and designing a range of multimedia content, including videos, podcasts, and social media posts. The content will feature interviews with 100 women entrepreneurs from across South Africa, highlighting their experiences, challenges, and successes in the business world especially their lessons in building forward from pandemic economies and tapping into the opportunities technology enables.

"Government spending into Black Women owned businesses remain an opportunity to transform our economies yet even in a technology era the gap to connect opportunity with validated credible entrepreneurs is widening. Research has found that while a lack of funds is a driving force behind these business closures, so too is the lack of access to marketing and PR Services. Small businesses face additional challenges of a lack of expertise and funds when tackling their marketing campaigns. This results in a misuse of funds and a decrease in visibility in the market’, says 25 year old Taynita Harilal co-founder of ECAfrica who also kick starts her PhD programme at Wits Business School.

“Through this campaign, we hope to inspire and empower women entrepreneurs in South Africa and to showcase their achievements to investors, BBBEE and other enablers. The #ECAfrica 100 / 2023 campaign will also include a series of events and workshops designed to provide women entrepreneurs with the skills and resources they need to succeed in the business world. These events will be held in partnership with a range of organizations and businesses across South Africa, including beyond International Women’s day to show our commitment to building a credible validated network of suppliers’, explains Harilal which she says is important to showcase how  women have a vital role to play in driving economic growth and creating jobs in Africa, and we are committed to supporting and promoting their entrepreneurship journey,".

We believe by using technology to centralise and create content that focuses and intentionally showcases entrepreneurs from across South Africa, we can create a powerful network of support and collaboration," elaborates Taynita Harilal who says ECafrica is excited to be launching this campaign on International Women's Day and look forward to working with women entrepreneurs to create a more equitable and inclusive business world.

The #ECAfrica 100 / 2023 campaign has already gained significant support on social media, with many entrepreneurs sharing their own stories and experiences using the hashtag #ECAfrica100. The campaign has also received support from several leading organizations and businesses across South Africa. “Over the next few weeks in our efforts to connect to enablers and investors who can help us build and empower our digital social marketing campaign we also want to create a pilot to demonstrate how living in a ChatGPT and AI era it’s critical to amplify and use technology to document and create compelling story telling that profiles our entrepreneurship to help drive investments and open new markets,’ concludes Taynita Harilal who is inviting investors, collaborators and networks to partner with ECAfrica.

To ensure that we cover as much ground as possible, we are inviting female-led businesses to apply to be profiled in our #ECAfrica 100 / 2023 multimedia campaign. We are looking for 100 outstanding entrepreneurs who are making a significant impact in their industries and communities. If you believe that your business fits this description, we encourage you to apply. To be considered favorably, please send an email to media@jtcomms.co.za and include the following information:

Mark your calendars for the premiere of "Sho't Left Broadway" presented by the National School of the Arts! From the 10th to the 12th of March, the Mandela at Joburg Theatre will be home to this exciting new musical. The play follows the story of Naledi, whose name means "star," as she pursues her dream of becoming a Broadway performer in a liminal world between life and death.

Don't miss this relatable and passionate production, which is part of the NSA's Artists in Residence program funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme supported by the DSAC. "Sho't Left Broadway" is suitable for audiences of all ages and promises to leave you with a song in your heart and hope for happy endings.

Directed and choreographed by leading creative Lesego van Niekerk, with musical direction by Siyanqoba Dlungwana, additional performance coaching by Yamikani Mahaka – Phiri, sets and costumes by Sarah Roberts and lighting by Mandla Mtshali, "Sho't Left Broadway" is a showcase production of the National School of the Arts. The original text was written by Tshepo Ratona who has captured a heart-warming story in the Naledi narrative.  The drama plays out in a liminal world between life and death and between auditioning and becoming a star.

With a rich musical tapestry of well-loved South African repertoire, "Sho't Left Broadway" is a play about dreams and the complexities of success. It also presents touchstones of our rich South African musical heritage.

It moves from being gritty and urban to being deeply mystical. To unlock her destiny, Naledi is compelled to make peace with the past.

Presented by a cast of 32 NSA learners who sing, dance and act and featuring a student band of 8 players, “Sho’t Left Broadway” explores the complexities of success and the importance of making peace with the past while also touching on the tragedy of talent unrealised and those who die before their time.

"Sho't Left Broadway" will appeal to the young and old.

Sho't left is derived from everyday South African 'taxi lingo'. A commuter wanting a ride to a destination close by will say 'Sho't left, driver,' meaning 'I want to get off just around the corner.”

Sometimes the “Sho’t Left” is simply not possible.

“Amplifying Access to Knowledge in AI Economies"

The African Media Resource Centre (AMRC) pioneers the future of media with first ever Fireside Master Class on Blockchain Technology. The event, which took place on March 1st, 2023, in Johannesburg, South Africa, is the first of its kind in the country and offers African journalists, freelancers, and writers an opportunity to learn about the potential applications of blockchain in media and explore innovation opportunities.

The AMRC, a not-for-profit organization committed to advancing media knowledge and training, hosted the Master Class in partnership with the Africa Blockchain Centre (ABC) and Cryptsense Digital Media Group. The event was designed as a pilot for a limited number of participants, offering insights into how blockchain technologies can transform economies, provide better social impact solutions, and enable media production, distribution, and consumption.

According to a report by the African Blockchain Alliance, there is a lack of awareness of blockchain in Africa, with many people still associating it solely with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. This lack of knowledge and understanding can limit the potential of African media practitioners to innovate and adopt new technologies, potentially putting them at a disadvantage compared to their international peers.

The AMRC's Master Class on Blockchain Technology is a significant step towards addressing this issue, offering first-hand access to cutting-edge insights and practical applications of the technology. Participants will learn from leading experts in the field, including African experts in Blockchain technology and Jeff Mkungusi, Co-Founder of the Africa Blockchain Centre.

The AMRC's commitment to building a skilled and knowledgeable workforce equipped to report on and analyse complex issues, encouraging collaboration and innovation, and advocating for press freedom and supporting media is commendable. The organization's ongoing efforts to advance media knowledge and training in Africa demonstrates its dedication to creating an enabling environment for a robust free press across the continent.

The Fireside Master Class on Blockchain Technology is just one example of the AMRC's capacity building efforts. By providing training and development opportunities for journalists, freelancers, bloggers, vloggers, writers, and content producers, the AMRC is helping to build a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that is equipped to report on and analyse complex issues. The organization also brings together media professionals from different sectors and regions, encouraging collaboration and facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices.

Innovation and experimentation are also a key focus for the AMRC. By promoting emerging technologies such as blockchain and AI, the organization aims to encourage media practitioners to experiment with new ways of creating, distributing, and monetizing content. This allows for the development of new revenue streams and business models for media organizations, enabling them to operate more sustainably.

‘The Fireside Master Class on Blockchain Technology is a unique opportunity for African journalists, freelancers, and writers to learn about the potential of blockchain in media and explore innovation opportunities. By participating in this event, they can position themselves as early adopters and innovators in the blockchain space, potentially leading to new business opportunities and competitive advantages. We hope to replicate the model and scale in South Africa and across markets and look forward to enablers and partners who we can collaborate with says,” Vanessa Perumal director of the AMRC.

“Overall, the education and training of African writers in Web3 and Blockchain technology is a worthwhile endeavour that can help to unlock new opportunities and create a more vibrant and innovative literary scene in Africa and beyond. The AMRC's ongoing commitment to advancing media knowledge and training in Africa is vital to creating an enabling environment for a robust free press across the continent.” says Perumal.

The AMRC is inviting partners to join them in advancing the media industry through innovative initiatives as the Fireside Master Class on Blockchain Technology. “Your support will help us expand access to knowledge and create more opportunities for journalists, freelancers, and content creators across the continent”, says Perumal.

Music, with its rich cultural roots, influences and historical importance, lies deep in the heart of South Africans. It is known and appreciated throughout Africa and the world. Inspired by this depth, Sam Mathe researched, compiled, and wrote From Kippie to Kippies and Beyond. Described asan encyclopaedia of South African music”, this colossal achievement is a tour de force that covers at least four generations of musicians from the 1920s to the contemporary era. The oldest, Peter Rezant, was born in the early 1900s while the youngest, Zoe Modiga, came into this world in 1994.

“I was inspired by the rich musical heritage we have as a country. So, I was convinced that the diversity and richness of this heritage is worth capturing in a book for the sake of posterity. It's part of our history which unfortunately has been neglected by those who claim to be its custodians,” explains Mathe.

Mathe has, with great dedication and respect as well as awe-inspiring and meticulous research, produced a study and a tribute to those not often remembered and honoured. The title is inspired by the saxophonist Kippie “Morolong” Moeketsi, who was born in the roaring twenties – the Jazz Age in the United States and a decade that witnessed the birth of marabi, the music of the black working class in the slum yards of Johannesburg. After his death, the Market Theatre in Johannesburg had a jazz venue, Kippies, named after him.

From yesteryears’ kings of kwela, sultans of sax jive and illustrious sultry queens of torch songs, to the stars of contemporary jazz, the book features the lives and works of over three hundred musicians. South Africa music lovers will find the greats such Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Hugh Masekela, Dollar Brand [Abdullah Ibrahim], Dorothy Masuku, Letta Mbuli, Caiphus Semenya, Busi Mhlongo, Todd Matshikiza and Chris McGregor, in these pages to name just a few. The younger generation of artists who shaped the South African pop scene in the eighties and left their mark such as Sipho Mabuse, Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lucky Dube, Chico Twala and Rebecca Malope are also included.

“After nearly a century since our music has been captured on vinyl, I believe there's no better time to have a book like this in the public domain. The current generation of musicians are interested in the history of this music and the individuals who helped to shape it. This book speaks directly to this generation in this regard,” says Mathe.

First released in the spring of 2021, From Kippie to Kippies and Beyond, is now in its second print with the first 100 copies quickly selling out. The book was awarded the AfriCAN Honoree Authors' Award (2022) and journalists from as far as France and Japan have sought Mathe out. “Even former president Kgalema Motlanthe personally called me to order a copy,” notes Mathe proudly.

“Everything about this journey was exciting particularly because it's uncharted terrain. The more I researched the more I realised that there are many fascinating stories behind the artists profiled in this book,” concluded Mathe who hopes to release a third edition.

From Kippie To Kippies is a timely and affirming addition to the evolving contemporary archives of a people on the rise after a history of pain and discrimination – casting light on so much musical creativity that until now remained in the shadows of history.

Technological innovations in the defence industry have always played a crucial role in the overall innovation for civil applications. Many systems and equipment originally destined for military use has been adopted by the general population in everyday applications and have been used to connect people across continents and increase overall efficiency and productivity. A locally produced solution allows countries to be self-reliant when solving modern problems efficiently and remains a driving force for sustainable economic growth.

The development of locally produced defence equipment and solutions has for a long time been the backbone of establishing South Africa’s capability to maintain their own sovereignty and assist the rest of the continent in peacekeeping operations. The decline in new developments in the South African defence sector has left its mark on the economic growth and technological development within the country. Without locally produced modern systems, the capability to perform any internal or peacekeeping operations is thinly stretched and the SANDF is reliant on outdated equipment, exposing some key areas where improvements could be made.

Milkor is one of the few private companies in the South African defence industry that has realised the importance of building local capabilities and developing equipment that could compete with the rest of the world. Milkor is at the forefront of defence industry innovation, showcasing a number of cutting-edge innovations over the last couple of years.

“We work closely with the Department of Defence, Armscor and the SAAF and are dedicated to providing locally produced systems to combat the immediate requirements South Africa has to resolve,” says Communications director Daniel du Plessis.

The development of the Milkor 380, Africa’s first category 4 and largest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ever produced, epitomises their capability to deliver world leading technologies to the South African defence and security branches. This is the first UAV of this size to be fully developed (hardware, software and testing) and manufactured in South Africa.

Capable of 35 hours of flight time and the ability to carry up to 210 kg of external payloads for various types of sensors, the Milkor 380 can be used across multiple sectors to combat existing issues in border security, maritime surveillance, conservation efforts and other reconnaissance operations throughout the country.

“The production of the Milkor 380 UAV allows the South African government to become completely self-reliant in reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence operations, eliminating the need for foreign acquisition of such systems,” says du Plessis.

Milkor has already begun manufacturing of the first systems intended for implementation by the South African government with a total of 5 systems being manufactured by the end of 2023. Locally produced at their facility in Cape Town, Milkor has spent the last seven years building key personnel that could deliver a complete solution including long term maintenance and training support for these systems.

With the country’s unemployment rate currently at 32.9%, projects such as this open the door to sustainable long term job creation and assistance in building key skills development within the country. Milkor has developed a strategy in utilizing some of the most skilled individuals in the industry for UAV development programs and combining them with talented engineers from the top universities in South Africa. This allows for sustainable growth of new skills being developed among the youth of South Africa, while reducing the requirement to seek employment in another country.

In South Africa agriculture is central to fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving food security in the whole of the Southern African region. Estimates suggest that more than 70 percent of the rural population depends on agriculture for their livelihoods and the Mordor Intelligence report: Agriculture in South Africa - Growth, Trends, Covid-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027) suggests that by 2035 the demand for food is projected to double.

A greater demand from a rising middle-class population for food and the increasing need for food security is driving the growth of the agriculture sector and productive farmers are worth their weight in gold. However entering and scaling farming productions, particularly in the rural areas, is not always an easy task.

The 2022 Inaugural National Presidential SMME Awards, established by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agencies, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) and in partnership with the European Union and 22 On Sloane, celebrated the feistiness and sheer determination of South African SMMEs.

This year Kevinot Farming (Pty) Ltd, a 100% black-female owned entity run by Nonopa Tenza, took the inaugural award for Rural-based SMMEs. Based in Ongeluksnek farming region of Matatiele area of the Eastern Cape, Kevinot Farming operates a 406Ha farm focused primarily on livestock and crops.

Kevinot is an acronym incorporating the family’s names and surname. In 2017 Tenza and her husband started Kevinot Farming as a side hustle kicking off with livestock and in 2019 diversified into crops. Tenza has since left a successful career in Corporate and Investment Banking and has taken over full operation of the farm. The business operates out of a government-leased farm originally leased by Tenza’s father-in-law more than 35 years ago. After his passing in 2014 the farm was underutilised until Tenza and her husband agreed to start farming the land and grow it to its full potential.

“We are passionate about farming and are serial entrepreneurs who have run several businesses over the years. Starting a farming business was both an entrepreneurial and social endeavour. We saw an opportunity to carry on a family legacy as well as utilising underutilised land to create jobs and fight the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment, and inequality in our area. We leveraged our education and extensive corporate experience in accounting, finance, banking as well as scientific research and development for the benefit of the area where we come from,” says Tenza.

Kevinot Farming runs a beef production breeding herd of F1 Angus cows, pedigree Angus Bulls, mixed Dohne Merino and Dormer sheep and grows yellow maize, sugar beans as well as lucerne and teff grasses. The business started small and has steadily grown to full capacity over the years as the demand for the produce keeps growing. Kevinot Farming has identified the extent of the opportunity to contribute to food security in the country, across the continent and globally and continue to look at ways of operating in line with these opportunities.

Tenza ’s focus since taking over the full reins of the business has been on establishing business processes, market segment analysis, stakeholder mapping and engagement, as well as strategy development and this has led to the business securing a lucrative maize offtake agreement with a large US multinational organisation with competitive pricing. The business has also invested heavily in infrastructure development, growing livestock numbers as well as fully utilising the arable land and is on a path to continued growth and sustainability.

Kevinot Farming has benefitted extensively from support from the Provincial Department of Agriculture through the local extension office, support from SEDA as well as a third-generation farmer in the area who provides mentorship.

Kevinot Farming in turn gives back to the community by assisting local farmers with market access and mechanisation services. Kevinot Farming has not only created permanent jobs but also offers up to 40 seasonal jobs as well as supporting micro enterprises, as some of the workers prefer to be paid in either Maize or Beans to sell to their local communities.

While issues of security of land tenure, access to clean water, electricity and roads, climate change and limited land for expansion are of considerable concern to Tenza and her business, she remains positive about the future of her farm and farming in general in South Africa.

“There is renewed interest in Agriculture from women, young people and people who previously did not have access to Agriculture, our government needs to harness this interest. Agriculture is a way of creating jobs and we need to offer awareness and training around agriculture from grass roots level such as schools as well as training land beneficiaries on the necessary skills to run productive and profitable farms,” says Tenza.

On 13 November 2022 JT Communication Solutions (JT Comms) won the Award for SMMEs Owned By Persons with Disabilities at the inaugural National Presidential SMME Awards established by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agencies, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) and in partnership the European Union and 22 On Sloane.

It was a fitting acknowledgement for a SMME and that has, over the last three years, felt the harsh winds of the global pandemic along with the pain of personal disability and in the process had to pivot not just in terms of core strategy, but also core competencies. From public relations to digital disruptions JT Comms have always defied the odds doggedly steering through trying times and flying the flag high for female entrepreneurship. The Covid-19 pandemic brought the business the same challenges faced by many SMMEs both here and globally, as well as the added blow of founder and managing director Vanessa Perumal literally losing her voice to a rare form of cancer and a full laryngectomy.

With the desire for driving social change, Perumal has always used her voice and that of JT Comms to champion the African narrative and disrupt the status quo. In fact JT Comms Entrepreneur Connect Africa (#ECAfrica) was all about telling the African entrepreneurial story. Despite her own battles recovering her voice, Perumal has found new ways to cooperatively partner with innovative, technologically driven African hubs to aid the growth of SMMEs both here and in Africa and encourage cross-country collaborations.

In looking to their business, JT Comms has moved towards the effective use of the digital space to create new revenue streams and promote youth employment. Furthermore Perumal is using her “new” voice to promote social entrepreneurship through speaking engagements.

“This award is significant not just as a win just for JT Communication Solutions but shows the commitment from our President and the various enabling bodies to align with entrepreneurship as an opportunity to fix South Africa forward,” says Perumal.

“With six million jobs lost during Covid 19 and the highest youth unemployment in the world and our inability to job create. Entrepreneurship is a key driver and we are honoured to be recognised for our contribution in growing the ecosystem for entrepreneurs and showcasing a more positive accurate narrative of the possibilities of aligning synergised networks.

“The more we can tap into enabling legislative frameworks like ESD funding and BBBEE opportunities beyond ticking off boxes, the more we are able to strive to creative transformative economies,” she continues.

The awards formed part of National Presidential SMMEs and Cooperatives Summit and winning SMMEs received cash prizes worth R100 000.00 and access to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress+ Africa which will take place on 13–14 September 2023 in Cape Town.

Johannesburg - South Africa – The Machine Learning Health Care Summit 2022 kicks off at the Hilton Hotel in Johannesburg today with the focus of the conference focusing on the transformation of the healthcare industry in Africa through Artificial Intelligence. AI is increasing efficiencies in drug discovery, radiology, patient risk identification, primary healthcare, diagnosis and treatment.

Acclaimed local publicist and social entrepreneur who survived a life-threatening cancer, Vanessa Perumal who traded her vocal cords to save her life in just two years, has gone from losing her voice to a rare cancer finding it once more as a speaker. She will address the summit hosted by Machine Learning Africa with a host of leading experts from across the health care industry.

As an ambassador of Afya Rekod, an African-developed-tech platform disrupting how data driven technology allows the world’s first mobility of data empowers patients and the entire health care ecosystem. Perumal together with co-founder of Afya Rekod, Irene Kiwia will demonstrate how the platform works when they speak at the AI in Health Care Summit 2022 to be held today (27 October 2022) at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton.

First launched in Kenya and now in South Africa, AfyaRekod is a patient-driven platform for health record management, built to assist users with better healthcare services. The platform allows organisations, health providers, and medical experts to interact and connect with patients, even remotely, in real-time while providing tools to store, manage and analyse health records, as well as manage hospitals and facilities.

Managing Director of JT Comms, AfyaRekod Ambassador Vanessa Perumal knows only too well the importance of having access to real-time info following the diagnosis of a rare cancer, a full laryngectomee and subsequent medical care. “AfyaRekod is a game changer and has given me a voice in my own medical care,” she says

“I have a long list of operations, medical interventions and prescriptions to my name, now I am safe in the knowledge that wherever I am, whatever medical practitioner is treating me, here or internationally, I have complete access to my medical information and no one has to hunt down my medical records,” Perumal explains.

AI is changing the world, and healthcare is no different. With a full programme of speakers the AI in Health Care Summit looks at the future of health care and focuses on the transformation of the healthcare industry in Africa through Artificial Intelligence: AI is increasing efficiencies in drug discovery, radiology, patient risk identification, primary healthcare, diagnosis and treatment. Perumal and Kiwia’s presentation is a conversation into the importance of access to accurate, real time health care information across borders and medical facilities and the potentialities of AfyaRekod.

“We have identified the capture and storage of accurate data across every possible level of infrastructure as a core problem. The lack of medical records and static data leads to poor health management” states Irene Kiwia co-founder of AfyaRekod.

“Bringing real time access to data was the solution. Our tool allows patients to create a portal with all their health data and most importantly gives patients sovereign rights of ownership of their data. It’s their right to have access to it. This system can improve the standard of living and drastically reduce mortality rates, as already seen in reports,” explains Kiwia.

"Machine Learning Africa provides insight into emerging machine learning technologies and their inevitable impact in transforming Africa. Provides a platform where innovators, technology vendors, end users and enthusiasts discuss latest innovations and technologies that transform businesses and the broader society and centralising an ecosystem of enablers allows for direct connection" says Founder Zenzele Ndolovu of Machine Learning Africa.

Homeless @ Home is a lyrical and sonic expression of love, longing, and uncertainty. It is an unsettling narrative told through poetry about a nation grappling with socio-economical politics of ownership, and a people’s volatile realities. It is a live poetry and music performance by one of South Africa’s well-known poets Mak Manaka collaborating with Malcolm Jiyane and the Alexander Choir.

The event is also a reflection of Manaka’s personal journey wrestling with his physical disability and trying to be at home with his own body. Homeless @ Home will unpack the different layers and facets to the meaning of ‘home’ and ‘homelessness’, asking “are we at home in our own skins, bodies, and languages”? If home is where one belongs, then what is home when living in a country that belongs to all, but not to itself?  And address the uncomfortable issues around ownership of one’s own body, skin, and language as a major drive to being homeless at home.

Homeless @ Home aims to spark intergenerational conversations about; social cohesion, disability, depression, violence, unemployment, inequality and corruption. Overall, Manaka’s main objective is to inspire self-determination and encourage young people to remember the past, to look past the unjust violence but rather at a people’s relentless determination to achieving the impossible.

Mr Manaka and a sign-language interpreter will dance a poem together centre stage.

The event will be a free event at the door.  To book your seat for the Free One Night Only event on the 20th October 2022 at Joburg Theatre’s Lesedi stage contact Hloni on 081 573 2582.

Says Manaka “Homeless at Home is an attempt to articulate what it means to be at home in your body, your skin, your language. If home is a place where one belongs, then are we at home with ourselves? Right now we have a management crisis, but the main crisis is how we relate to each other as Africans as humans, are we at home with ourselves as South Africans?

The One Night Only event will feature

Mak Manaka (lead vocal)

Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O (2 percussionist, bass, trombone, and piano)

Amakhono We Sintu Choir of 8 sin

The production is supported by The National Arts Council
