In response to South Africa's ongoing energy challenges, SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS, affectionately known as COVIVI, pioneers a transformative vision. Founder Liyanda Ka Ndaba leads the charge in bridging the solar gap through innovative Stokvel solutions, propelling sustainable energy amidst the nation's pressing challenges.
In a pioneering move to bridge the solar gap in South Africa's marginalized communities, SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS, known affectionately as COVIVI, emerges as a trailblazer in revolutionizing renewable energy solutions. Founded by visionary Liyanda Ka Ndaba in February 2020, the company not only envisions transforming the energy landscape but also pioneers innovative ways to make solar power accessible and affordable. At the heart of this groundbreaking approach is the recognition of the power and potential of Stokvel savings schemes, providing a unique solution to uplift struggling communities and democratize access to sustainable energy.
In a groundbreaking move to confront South Africa's persistent energy crisis, creating a solution to allow more communities to have access to Solar Energy is at the forefront of revolutionizing renewable energy solutions. Liyanda, a novice in the energy solar sector, occupied a seat and upskilled herself to find new solutions post Covid to remain relevant, pivot, and learn a new competency. Today, her company has swiftly adapted to become a trailblazer amid these demanding times where South Africa’s energy crisis is causing havoc.
The genesis of SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS is rooted in the understanding that migrating to solar power is a pressing need for all South Africans, yet the challenge lies in covering the associated costs. Recognizing the proven efficacy of Stokvel savings schemes in struggling communities, where members pool funds to support each other, Liyanda Ka Ndaba identified a gap that could revolutionize the adoption of solar energy.
Liyanda Ka Ndaba has a personal connection to the struggle for sustainable energy access in South Africa, grounded in her mother's involvement with the Johannesburg Retired Teachers Association (JORETA). As the daughter of a retired school teacher, Liyanda attended JORETA's retirement pension fund meetings, using these gatherings as a platform to introduce her groundbreaking vision. In one such meeting, she passionately shared how Stokvels could serve as a dynamic vehicle for pooling resources, enabling each member to afford solar solutions. This engaging pitch unfolded before a captivated audience eager to embrace an innovative approach to harnessing solar power. The focal point of SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS lies in the revolutionary Solar Stokvel model, strategically positioned to bridge the gap and democratize access to sustainable energy solutions. This visionary initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of struggling communities but also aligns seamlessly with the broader mission of integrating digital and tech innovations into the solar ecosystem.
The impetus behind the venture was the glaring issue faced by South African communities during load shedding. Liyanda recognized a need for reliable backup systems, and thus, Sne’langa was born. As load shedding continues to plague South Africa, Liyanda envisions the company as a solution provider, catering to the nation's pressing need for dependable energy sources.
As South Africa grapples with the extended challenges of load shedding and energy instability, SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS has tailored its offerings to provide cutting-edge solutions. Liyanda Ka Ndaba, the founder, underscores the urgency of meeting the ever-growing demand for reliable energy alternatives.
SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS specializes in the 3kva solar system, a popular choice among customers. Beyond installations, the company offers services such as solar panel cleaning, larger system constructions, and the installation of solar camera systems. Notably, the company embraces digital energy and the metaverse, utilizing digital tools and platforms to revolutionize the energy generation process.
The company's target audience includes stokvel groups with common goals and retired government employees. What sets SNE' LANGA apart is its unique solar stokvel model, accommodating all income levels and offering three flexible payment options. This inclusive approach enables the company to reach a broad spectrum of clients, including those with lower incomes.
Liyanda's journey started during a learnership period, where she gained valuable insights into energy transformation. Despite facing challenges as a woman in a male-dominated industry, she persevered, aided by a supportive external team. Overcoming skepticism about solar installations, she aims to make renewable energy adoption widespread, positioning SNE' LANGA as a global leader in green energy solutions.
In a strategic move to fortify township economies, SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS is actively collaborating with stokvels. The company recognizes the transformative power of these community-driven savings schemes and aims to empower them further. Plans to approach the government for rebates for pensioners within stokvels underscore the commitment to community well-being.
Recognizing the significance of stokvels in South African culture, SNE' LANGA collaborates with these groups to provide alternative energy solutions. Members enjoy benefits such as free solar panel services and unique perks like a free iron and solar kettle with the purchase of a 3kva system. The company's role extends beyond business; it actively contributes to financial literacy and sustainable energy practices within stokvel communities.
SNE' LANGA envisions expansion by engaging with the government to secure rebates for pensioners in stokvels. Short-term goals include building a robust stokvel database, while long-term plans involve introducing solar stokvels to township businesses. The company has received recognition as a digital space innovator and aims to continue this momentum.
For customers interested in solar systems, SNE' LANGA offers flexible payment plans: cash on delivery, a 50% deposit with the balance on installation day, and a half-price option with a 25% deposit on installation day and the following month.
SNE' LANGA SOLAR SYSTEMS, born out of crisis, stands as a beacon of innovation, offering practical solutions to South Africa's energy challenges. The company's commitment to inclusivity, community empowerment, and sustainability positions it as a key player in the renewable energy sector.

Paysho, the groundbreaking online escrow service, is transforming the landscape of online transactions by providing a secure platform for both buyers and sellers. In an era where online fraud and scams are rampant, Paysho emerges as much-needed protection for buyers and sellers, safeguarding all funds until all parties involved in a transaction are completely satisfied that all terms have been met.
The Challenge of Online Transactions
Online classifieds and buy-and-sell platforms have long been plagued by the risk of fraud, creating a barrier for genuine buyers and sellers and opportunities for scammers to rob people of their hard-earned money or belongings. Anyone who has ever tried to buy or sell anything via classifieds or Facebook buy-and-sell groups will know that the process is fraught with fraud. Any sale between strangers, especially those from different towns or cities, requires one of the parties to take a risk, be it the buyer sending money off before they receive the goods or the seller shipping the goods before the buyer pays for them. That unfortunately has created an opportunity for dishonest people to scam others out of their hard-earned cash by either buying and not paying or selling and not delivering the goods.
Paysho addresses this challenge head-on, offering a third-party platform that ensures financial protection and peace of mind for users.
South Africa’s Urgent Need for Secure Transactions
A 2014 survey by global firm PwC revealed that 69% of South African respondents had fallen victim to financial crime, highlighting the urgency for a secure transaction solution. However, a survey conducted by Paysho in 2019, revealed that 86% of online classifieds shoppers had never heard of an escrow service. And therein lies the problem. Although escrow services have been around for decades, they remain fairly unknown by a large number of people who need them. This is evidenced by the number of social media posts from people reportedly having been scammed out of large sums of money or valuable possessions.
And that is where Paysho comes in…
Whether for services or physical and digital goods, Paysho, with its innovative escrow system, emerges as a secure payment platform, addressing the need for South Africans to have a trustworthy platform that safeguards transactions, ensuring that buyers and sellers can transact with confidence.
Bongani Matshisi, the visionary behind Paysho, conceived the platform after personally experiencing the challenges of building trust in online transactions. While selling a product through social media, Matshisi found that potential customers outside of his immediate geographic area were reluctant to send money to him out of fear of getting scammed. After searching and not finding an appropriate solution to this challenge, he decided to create one himself. Reflecting his commitment to creating a secure space in which to transact, Paysho aims to eliminate the fears of scams, providing a haven for buyers and sellers.
“The exchange of goods and services for money has existed for thousands of years. What the internet has done is to widen the marketplace and removed the geographical barriers for buyers and sellers. What that means is that someone in Kimberley can now buy an iPhone from someone in Butterworth and vice versa. Platforms such as Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace have made it very easy for buyers and sellers to transact with each other. However, these platforms are rife with scammers trying to find their next victim. Every day, people are getting scammed out of thousands of Rands by these scammers. With the state of the economy the way as it is, more and more people are having to sell their goods to supplement their income. Phones, computers, Playstations, musical instruments and other high value electronics are some of the items that people are selling on classifieds. And then you get more emotional purchases like pets where criminal syndicates are now taking advantage of emotionally vulnerable people by selling them non-existent dogs or puppies. And then there is the services space where contractors are collecting deposits from home owners and disappearing with them. Or where people are getting work done for them and then not paying the service providers. Paysho exists to eliminate all those problems. Paysho not only serves as a shield against these threats but also envisions a safer, more informed consumer landscape. By embracing Paysho, users not only safeguard their transactions but actively contribute to a community fostering trust, transparency, and financial well-being,” says Bongani Matshisi founder of Paysho who isadamant that together as a collective we can redefine the future of secure online transactions.

The state of Maths in South Africa is facing significant challenges, with less than 30% of matric students opting for math, and only half of them passing their exams, as reported by Business Tech. In response to this pressing issue, Lesedi Mochadibane, a 23-year-old entrepreneur with nearly 5 years of experience in the edtech space, has taken a bold step to address the problem that plagues students across the country.
"Many factors contribute to the state of Maths in South Africa, and some of these issues are beyond the control of a young individual like myself," Lesedi remarked. However, his commitment to effecting change led him to conduct intensive research to identify the core problems within the education system that he could influence. Three key issues emerged:
With this understanding, Lesedi set out to develop a platform that would provide students with high-quality math notes, completely free of charge. These notes are designed to break down complex principles into an easy-to-understand format, incorporating vibrant colours and diagrams to make learning an engaging and enjoyable process. Each example within the notes includes step-by-step explanations, allowing students to see how the principles are applied in real time. Furthermore, this platform reduces the time students spend creating their own notes allowing them to use the extra time saved to practice more, making learning accessible to everyone.
Lesedi emphasized, "Most companies that offer notes charge students, or they provide a limited free version and expect students to pay for access to their full library of notes. I wanted to be the first to offer the best notes on the market completely free of charge."
His background in animations and art has lent a unique visual flair to his notes, making them akin to watching an animated movie. Each topic and every page is distinctively designed, departing from the conventional black-and-white writing with bullet points offered by other note providers. Recognizing South Africa's linguistic diversity, Lesedi has used simplified English to ensure that students, regardless of their proficiency in the language, can easily comprehend the notes.
The platform is called freenotes.co.za and within one month of launching the site it had reached over 3000 site views and 2000 unique visitors. 10% of the users were not even from the African continent with over 200 of them coming from the United States and almost 50 from the United Kingdom which indicates that the platform is on a global standard of quality.
Lesedi Mochadibane's dedication to revolutionizing the state of Maths in South Africa is an inspiring example of a young individual's capacity to drive change and empower students with the tools they need to succeed.

In a groundbreaking partnership backed by compelling data, Memeza Community Safety and AURA have joined forces to spearhead a remarkable transformation in school safety and crime prevention across South Africa. This strategic alliance leverages data-driven insights and harnesses the power of smart, scalable, and disruptive technology to address urgent security needs, particularly in the vulnerable communities where the protection of educational Information and Communication (ICT) has become an imperative.
In a collaborative effort to safeguard the future of South African children and protect the educational information and communication technology (ICT) essential for their growth, Memeza Community Safety and AURA have joined forces. This strategic partnership aims to address critical issues surrounding school safety and crime prevention, focusing on vulnerable communities where formalized response networks are limited.
Over the past year, 1334 public schools and early childhood development (ECD) centers have fallen victim to burglaries resulting in the theft of educational ICT equipment. This poses a severe threat to the education of our youth, as illiterate youth are statistically more likely to become involved in criminal activities. Vulnerable schools, often located in township areas, face the challenge of affordability when it comes to security measures. Additionally, their high-risk status often makes it difficult for them to secure insurance coverage, leaving them unable to replace stolen educational ICT equipment.
The partnership between AURA and Memeza, which was established approximately four years ago, seeks to address these critical issues. Memeza's unique security solution, strategically acts as a early detection system that helps pro-actively identify potential threats. In the event of an attempted burglary, systems alert the Memeza monitoring center using sound and visuals. Upon verification, the center mobilizes the Public response structures, with AURA playing a pivotal role in linking to the wider Private security response sector. AURA’s technology will automatically dispatch the nearest vetted armed responder to each school. The utilisation of the AURA platform has and will continue to drastically reduce response times, allowing for true crime prevention. Other essential partners in this collaborative effort include Eyes & Ears Network, Business Against Crime, SaferCity, SAPS, local Community Policing Forums and Department of Education.
Currently, AURA is actively involved in helping Memeza protect 187 no-fee-paying public schools Nationally, many of which are primary schools. These schools have received educational ICT equipment and learning programs through corporate sponsorship, primarily aimed at enhancing mathematics and reading literacy. Unfortunately, these schools often lack security and response measures, rendering them unable to access insurance coverage. Memeza's nonprofit approach addresses this gap by securing educational ICT through specialized solutions, which is mostly funded through sponsorship.
Thanks to the partnership with AURA and other key collaborators, Memeza has achieved a remarkable 98% success rate in preventing educational ICT theft. Additionally, the schools involved have experienced a 100% insurance claim payout rate. This partnership stands as a testament to the power of collective action in securing the future of South African children's education.
“We partnered with AURA because of their track record and their global leadership in making instant and reliable security and medical assistance more accessible and affordable through the deployment of cutting-edge technology. In a country where only 2% of the population has access to private emergency response services, tens of millions of South Africans require access to affordable private solutions. AURA recognizes this pressing issue and is committed to bridging the gap in both developed and developing countries” says Elmarie Pereira, CEO & co-founder of Memeza Community Safety.
The partnership between Memeza Community Safety and AURA signifies a transformative step toward enhancing school safety. By integrating AURA's innovative technology into Memeza’s existing ecosystem, Memeza empowers schools with instant emergency response services. This integration enables Memeza to offer its users the closest vetted private security and medical response units, ensuring rapid assistance in times of need.
"As Memeza Community Safety and AURA embark on this transformative journey, we recognize the critical role of safeguarding educational ICT in our schools. South Africa grapples with a significant and persistent challenge – a high crime rate that impacts communities and threatens the future of our children. In this context, ensuring the security of these essential tools for learning is paramount. By partnering with AURA's innovative technology, we are not only protecting valuable assets but also nurturing the potential of our future leaders. Together, we stand united in the fight against crime, committed to creating an environment where education can thrive, unburdened by the shadows of insecurity that have plagued our communities for far too long. We believe that through this partnership, we can not only strengthen school safety but also contribute to a safer South Africa for all,’’ says Pereira.

Boldy Authentic Songstress Dr. Luanga Choba Returns with Powerful EP, 'Gonzo & Other Stories,' Unveiling a Decade of Artistic Evolution and Empowerment
Mystical, potent, and utterly captivating, singer-songwriter Luanga Choba is back after a nine-year sabbatical with a powerful new EP about reclaiming one’s feminine energy and casting off the 'yoke' or burden of womanhood. The launch of the EP takes place on 30 September 2023 at the Umlilo Flame & Grill Restaurant in Rustenburg. Don't miss this enchanting evening of music and empowerment. Additionally, on the same day of the live launch, the EP will be available online on all streaming platforms.
Releasing in spring 2023, the five-track EP Gonzo & Other Stories refers to both the track O Ntshapa Gonzo (You Drive Me Crazy) and her earthy “gonzo soul” musical style.
“Gonzo” is a reference to “gonzo journalism”, a term coined in the 1970s to refer to Hunter S Thompson’s unconventional – and highly personal and internalised – style of writing. Similarly experimental in her approach, Luanga’s music melds ancient rhythms with a cappella sounds and haunting vocals, and transfixes the listener with its raw and earnest authenticity.
This deep-thinking “conveyer of song” whose music draws deeply on African spirituality is also a medical doctor – and an important part of her identity as a healer is facilitating a monthly meditation circle for women in North West, where she is based.
Unapologetically indigenous and drawing strongly on her roots, Gonzo & Other Stories is the culmination of a seven-year writing process whereby different rhythms and sensibilities were woven together into a cohesive whole, complete with “stamping my feet in my red high heels, mouth clicks and hand claps” as percussive elements, explains Luanga.
Significantly, the process of creation taught her how to ululate – or “sungulate”, as she puts it. While ululation is a hallmark of weddings, funerals and other occasions to signify extremes of joy and grief, it had never been in her vocal arsenal until she taught herself to master it. She would steal away to the sanctuary of the mountains to practise and refine her ululation technique, away from the noise of city life – “and it has awakened my feminine energy”.
It’s a deep well that she has been exploring ever since breaking onto the music scene in 2013 with her debut offering as singer-songwriter, Luanga Who? Having always found singing to be “the most authentic expression of who I am”, this Shell Road to Fame runner-up made a detour into the world of medicine and practised as a doctor locally and in the United Kingdom before returning to where her heart lay – the world of music.
It’s been 10 years since that release, but during that time Luanga turned to introspection to draw inspiration for her new material – and perfect it. A paralysed vocal cord contributes texture and nuance to her distinctive vocals; it’s also a physical symbol of her existential quest to find her voice.
“I was asking myself deep questions. It wasn’t really about music – I was trying to find my most optimal voice, not just my singing voice but my voice as a person,” says Luanga.
“The track Joko [the first single, about the yoke of womanhood] is a teacher, and to find the voice for that I had to go to deep, dark places, back to my childhood. I had to excavate my singing voice, and use that brokenness as part of my hidden journey.
“Gonzo & Other Stories is really about rediscovering and reclaiming what was already there: my voice. It’s about healing. It’s about standing up and speaking up, and finding the treasure in one’s wounding.”
Anthony Koopman of Puretone Productions, who has an intuitive feel for how to bring out the best in her sound, returns to co-produce the new EP, which Luanga is self-releasing under her independent label, Xhimvani Records & Publishing.
“I am embodying womanly power in my music. It feels powerful. To be honest, the songwriter in me is a wild woman … I try to tame her and bring her into this world, but not too much. And I have the confidence to let her out when on stage,” she says.
Although her new EP Gonzo & Other Stories is sung in her mother tongue, Setswana (a language that is under-represented in mainstream music), Luanga believes it transcends the realm of “traditional” music to have universal appeal. “I hope it moves other people the way it moves me,” she says. “I hope it opens ears and lands on open minds.”
Tickets to book your up close and personal seat for the dinner and live performance costs R350 and can be booked through www.webtickets.co.za or at the Pick n Pay ticket Kiosks and the venue is the Umlilo Flame & Grill Restaurant in Rustenburg

In a historic and groundbreaking move, the launch of the Memeza GBV Reduction and Prevention Programme, funded through the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation took place yesterday, August 24, 2023, at the Victor Ndlazilwane Hall in Daveyton. The event saw the convergence of over 600 delegates, including luminaries from various sectors, demonstrating a unified commitment to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and enhance crime prevention.
The Deputy Minister of Police, Mr. Cassel C. Mathale, and the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs. Hendrieta Ipeleng Bogopane, graced the event with their presence. Their visit to the Daveyton Police station for a walk-through before the briefing highlighted the significance of this initiative.
Key speakers at the event included Dr. Phalane from the Civilian Secretariat for Police Services, who stressed the profound impact of GBV on individuals and communities, emphasizing the loss of income, family breakdown, and economic challenges. Dr. Phalane also highlighted the longstanding partnership between the Civilian Secretariat of Police and Memeza, which has extended tools to combat violence and crime to vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children. This collaboration aligns perfectly with the objective of eradicating GBV and crime.
Memeza Founder and Director, Mme Thuli Mthethwa, highlighted the rapid growth of response networks, facilitated through partnerships with private security entities such as AURA and SaferCity. Thuli underscored the power of alarm systems in reducing crime and expressed the need for more technology, including drones, in the fight against crime.
Mr. Masilele, CPF Gauteng Chair, stressed the importance of addressing GBV and crime through a combination of ecosystems, emphasizing the use of technology as an enabler. He commended Memeza's alarm systems as a positive deterrent and welcomed the transition to E-policing.
A poignant moment came when GBV survivor, Mrs. Reneilwa Mphahlele, shared her story of resilience. Her traumatic experience within her family home, where her seven-year-old son served as her inspiration, highlighted the urgent need for change.
Mr. Sam Hlambela, Branch Manager of FNB Daveyton Mall, representing the First Rand Empowerment Foundation, reiterated the organization's commitment to community support and safety, particularly for the girl child. He emphasized the importance of collective community action.
The event also witnessed the distribution of alarms to nurses and Victim Empowerment Shelters Programmes, though it was acknowledged that more shelters are needed to address the escalating violence and the shortage of adequate space and resources.
In closing, the launch of the GBV Reduction and Prevention Programme, coinciding with the BRICS summit, was viewed as a significant step in the fight against GBV. It was stressed that the root causes of GBV, included unemployment and economic instability, must be addressed to create lasting change. BRICS was seen as a beacon of hope for economic growth, with the potential to alleviate poverty and reduce GBV.
The event underscored the importance of collective action and partnerships in the battle against criminality, with a resounding message that victory over crime is only possible through unity.
This launch marks the beginning of a transformative journey towards a safer, more empowered South Africa.

Fostering a literary landscape that embraces diversity and inclusion, the 2023/24 Call for Manuscripts is proudly extended by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) in collaboration with the Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association of South Africa (ANFASA). This call is a dedicated platform for amplifying marginalized voices, celebrating South African stories, and preserving heritage in authentic official languages.
The DSAC Publishing Hub seeks to uplift silenced authors, providing a unique opportunity for those who tell South African stories in genuine official languages. This initiative is a crucial step in widening the pool of voices that shape South African literature.
Of the 22 manuscripts selected for funding, three will be transformed into braille editions, making a total of 25 accessible books. This inclusion ensures that visually impaired authors can also partake in the rich literary heritage of South Africa. The DSAC Publishing Hub invites all authors to participate in this transformative initiative, with the manuscript submission deadline fast approaching on 8th September 2023
Diversity and inclusion are not just words; they are the essence of ANFASA's call to authors for manuscripts. The initiative invites submissions that explore unique perspectives, tackle themes of national importance, and reflect South African culture and heritage. Manuscripts in official South African languages, including Khoisan languages, are actively encouraged.
Authors submitting manuscripts to the DSAC Publishing Hub gain more than just funding opportunities. They receive access to publishers who will guide them through the production and publishing process. Moreover, the selection panel is committed to offering advice and support to authors whose manuscripts do not advance to the next round, reinforcing a developmental focus.
Prof Ngubane, ANFASA Chairman, emphasizes the importance of this grant funding: "This initiative empowers silenced voices, champions diversity, and preserves our heritage. We are not only expanding the pool of South African literature but ensuring that it reflects the rich tapestry of our nation."
