As Mandela Day Approaches, Dr. Muda Foundation Launches "Boys Leading Change" to Address Youth Development Gender Gap

Pretoria, South Africa – While much-needed attention has been given to empowering girls, a critical crisis has been quietly growing: the marginalisation of boys in youth development programmes. As South Africa prepares for Mandela Day on 18 July, Dr. Mmatepeng "Muda" Temane is launching a groundbreaking initiative to address this overlooked gap.

Her Boys Leading Change programme, recently endorsed by two Department of Education districts, tackles what she calls "the invisible crisis" – the lack of investment in boys' development that is contributing to many of today's community challenges.

"While we've made tremendous strides in empowering girls – and rightly so – we've inadvertently created a blind spot around boys," explains Dr. Temane, who transitioned from full-time corporate work to mission work through her Dr. Muda Foundation in January 2025. "We envision our Boys Leading Change flagship programme becoming a global movement of boys who share experiences across multi-cultural backgrounds, ready to lead changes in their various countries and communities."

Dr. Temane emphasizes the urgency of this mission: "We are intentional in grooming boys that will be responsible men and who will stand in the gap for the much-needed father figures, to curb GBV and heal the heartache and scourges of fatherlessness. This isn't just about South Africa – it's about transforming communities worldwide."

Global Expansion Already Underway

The programme's impact is already crossing borders. Boys Leading Change has successfully established a footprint in Malawi, where it was officially registered by Zomba City Council in December 2024. Plans for the official launch by Founder Dr. Temane and Malawi Ambassadors are currently underway, demonstrating the programme's potential for international scalability.

A Mandela Day Call to Action

With Mandela Day approaching on 18 July, Dr. Temane is calling on South Africa to embrace Nelson Mandela's vision of service by recognising that building better communities requires investing in ALL children – including the forgotten boys.

Annual Boys Leadership and Adventure Camp

The flagship component of the programme is the annual Boys Leadership and Adventure Camp, designed to help young men discover themselves and their talents through experiential learning and mentorship.

Soweto is set to relive the defiant energy of 1976 through the powerful revival of Sarafina!, the iconic protest musical that captured the spirit of a generation. In commemoration of the 49th anniversary of the June 16 Uprising — and as a prelude to the milestone 50th anniversary in 2026 — Joburg City Theatres, led by the Soweto Theatre, will transform the precinct into a three-day cultural and educational experience from 14 to 16 June.

From community workshops to youth-led arts showcases, and culminating in a vibrant Sarafina! concert performance, the event promises to immerse audiences in a living tribute to the bravery of South Africa’s youth.

Beyond the Stage: A Community Renaissance
The June 16 commemoration extends far beyond performances, delivering lasting improvements to Soweto's cultural heart. The city's comprehensive Clean & Safe initiatives include:

"This isn't just a three-day event—it's the beginning of Soweto's cultural renaissance," says Dada Morero Executive Mayor of Johannesburg. "We're investing in infrastructure that will serve the community long after the final curtain call. We are reclaiming Soweto’s place as the epicentre of youth activism and creative resistance. Sarafina! is more than a musical – it is a reminder of what courage looks like when led by the youth. At a time when the country is once again at a political crossroads, we invite all generations to reconnect with the values of unity, resistance, and hope.”

49 Years Since June 16: Soweto Celebrates, Reflects, and Mobilises

The June 16 Uprising in 1976 marked a turning point in South Africa’s liberation history, when students rose against the apartheid regime’s imposition of Afrikaans in schools. Their sacrifice, led by youth like Hector Pieterson, remains a powerful call to action — and this year, Soweto answers that call.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s DSAC Publishing Hub 2025/26, administered by the Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association of South Africa (ANFASA), presents a critical intervention towards documenting South African stories written in the different official languages including braille and the Khoi and San Languages thus providing access to information and preserving linguistic heritage. This is the third year that this programme was launched and has produced remarkable results.

Proven Success Story

The programmes impact is undeniable: 57 published works including the first-ever books in Khwedam, !Xuhnthali, and Nama languages – marking a historic preservation milestone for Khoi and San cultures. The initiative generated over 314,000 digital impressions in its first cycle, proving significant public appetite for indigenous content.

"We're racing against time," said Minister Gayton McKenzie. "Any delay leads to the loss in making available content written in our languages. Through this programme, we are ensuring that future generations do not miss out on historically valuable information."

Comprehensive Support System

The 2025/26 cycle offer to authors, language experts and publishers:

Cultural Emergency Response

With applications closing on 13 June 2025 for publishers and language experts and on 27 June 2025 for manuscripts, this initiative urgently seeks:

Professor Sihawukele Ngubane, ANFASA Chairman, emphasised the urgency: "We're not just creating books – we're creating an opportunity for books written in indigenous South African languages as well as Khoi and San Languages. This program has become South Africa's most important literary programme."

Breaking Historical Barriers

The initiative specifically addresses centuries of marginalisation of books written in indigenous languages, prioritising women, youth, people living with disabilities and historically excluded communities. All publication formats – including audiobooks and Braille – ensure accessibility across South Africa's diverse reading needs.

The programme has already demonstrated its transformative power, with published authors reporting increased community pride in reading books written in their languages and renewed interest among young readers.

The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) and Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association of South Africa (ANFASA) released the third annual DSAC Publishing Hub open call. Building on two successful previous cycles, this established program continues its mission of preserving all South African official languages and amplifying marginalised voices.

The DSAC Publishing Hub is poised to amplify its reach and continue to deepen its impact with further publication of impactful literary works. An impressive collection of fifty-seven works, comprising of forty-three physical books, eight audiobooks, and six books converted to braille have been produced to date. Notably, four Khoi and San books written in Khwedam, !Xuhnthali, and Nama were published to further emphasising the importance of linguistic and cultural preservation.

As part of DSAC's broader mission to revitalise South Africa’s publishing sector and cultivate a thriving literary culture, the initiative continues to prioritise inclusivity and representation. With a strong emphasis on elevating indigenous languages literature and bridging systemic gaps, the program enters its third year with the ambitious goal of further producing new remarkable literary works—cementing its role as a catalyst for transformation in the national literary ecosystem

The Honourable Minister Gayton McKenzie affirmed that South African literature has significantly strengthened through the first two cycles of this initiative. "As we enter the third year, we're not just continuing to publish books—we're building a sustainable ecosystem for preserving our languages, documenting our histories, and ensuring all South Africans see themselves reflected in our national literature," said Minister McKenzie

The DSAC Publishing Hub's inaugural cycle generated over 314,337 digital impressions, establishing new pathways for accessibility in South African literature.

Key elements of the 2025/26 initiative include:

"The Publishing Hub has demonstrated consistent growth and extraordinary impact over its first two cycles," said the Chairman of ANFASA - Prof Sihawukele Ngubane “With this third round of funding, we're strengthening the foundation we've built—creating both cultural preservation and sustainable livelihoods in our creative economy."

This initiative addresses critical challenges in South Africa's publishing landscape, including limited publishing opportunities for indigenous language works and accessibility barriers for readers with disabilities.

Johannesburg, March 4, 2025 — This International Women's Day, a powerful duo—a cancer survivor who found her voice through adversity and a young adult PhD candidate driving innovation—are launching the 'Voice Bank' initiative to amplify women entrepreneurs and promote circular economies across Africa.

Vanessa Perumal, a cancer survivor who underwent a total laryngectomy, and her daughter Taynita Harilal, a PhD candidate at Wits Business School in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation, co-founded ECAfrica to build a technology-driven Resource Bank and an investment pipeline. Their goal is to transform underrepresented voices into powerful catalysts for change, building a digital ecosystem where stories become assets and resources flow to entrepreneurs who need them most.

The Voice Bank is a core component of ECAfrica’s Resource Bank, a tech-enabled platform inspired by disruptive models like Uber and Airbnb, which offer access without ownership. The platform will digitally match underutilised assets—from office furniture and unused buildings to skills and mentorship opportunities—with validated entrepreneurs in local communities.

"Our platform acts as a virtual marketplace, ensuring that resources are banked and redistributed to drive inclusive economic transformation," says Harilal, who is focusing her PhD research on succession planning in family-owned businesses. "By leveraging digital technology, we’re not just telling stories but creating a repository of real-world solutions for entrepreneurs."

For Perumal, who is redefining leadership through her journey as a cancer survivor, the Voice Bank initiative is deeply personal:

"After losing my natural voice, I found a new strength in advocating for others. This project isn’t just about banking voices—it’s about building a legacy of empowerment, where every story contributes to a circular economy that creates opportunities for generations to come."

Pioneering new ground, Perumal and Harilal lead by example through their legacy brand, JTComms. The dynamic duo made their first investment last week in tech startup Aflu Med, marking the launch of Techlevate, the investment wing of ECAfrica.

How to Participate

Women entrepreneurs, founders, and changemakers are invited to contribute to the Voice Bank in two ways:

  1. Submit a 90-second to 3-minute video:
    • Introduce yourself and your business
    • Share how your work accelerates inclusion
    • Spotlight a fellow entrepreneur who inspires you
  2. Share a photo with your insights:
    • Provide a quote or lesson learned
    • ECAfrica will transform it into shareable content

Submission Deadline: March 6, 2025 Submit to: hello@ecafrica.net or media@jtcomms.co.za

Driving the "Accelerate Action" Theme

This initiative aligns with the International Women's Day 2025 theme, “Accelerate Action for a More Inclusive World”, by turning resource limitations into opportunities for collaborative innovation. The Voice Bank will serve as a living archive, preserving entrepreneurial insights and innovations that inspire future generations and support climate change interventions.

About ECAfrica

ECAfrica is a Pan-African business development platform revolutionizing entrepreneurial support through strategic mentorship, market linkages, and innovative digital solutions. Johannesburg, 25 February 2025 - Just weeks after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to “ensuring that every child can read for meaning in the foundation phase,” a new report has been released by the 2030 Reading Panel.

The 2025 report, released today in Johannesburg, provides critical insights into the country’s progress in transforming early-grade reading. The Minister of Education, Siviwe Gwarube, recently described this vital element of education reform as critical to protecting “South Africa’s greatest asset, our young people.”

Key Findings

2030 Reading Panel recommendations:

  1. Measuring what matters: implementing a universal standardized assessment of reading at the primary school level. While the SASE is a commendable improvement on the part of the DBE, it is a sample based assessment and cannot be used to provide school or district level insights.
  2. Moving from slogans to budgets: allocating meaningful budgets to reading resources and reading interventions not only talking about them
  3. Providing a minimum set of reading resources to all Foundation Phase classrooms (Grade R-3) as a matter of urgency.
  4. A university audit of pre-service teacher education programmes that leads to improved quality of BEd programmes. An audit is currently underway by the CHE, but a critical issue in raising quality will be paying close attention to the curriculum aspects of the BEd.

Key Note Speaker

The keynote speaker at the event is Dr. Jaime Saavedra, Regional Director of Human Development for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank. He is also the former Peruvian Minister of Education. He has reflected on the moment Peru confronted its education crisis head on:

“The PISA results came out three weeks after I started, so those results were a baseline for us. Peru was last. Last of the 65 countries of PISA. Not the bottom 10 percent. Last. And that was a shock”, he says.

“We could have decided to play the results down to say, ‘But Peru has improved since 2009’ (which it had), or ‘But we are better than many countries that didn’t even take PISA’, or ‘It is an OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] examination that is alien to our culture and priorities’. But we didn’t go down that route. Instead, we decided to own the problem, to use the results to say, ‘Look, we’re not in trouble. We’re in deep trouble.”, he said.

New Panellists to Strengthen National Advocacy.

To bolster its efforts in literacy reform and systemic change, the 2030 Reading Panel welcomes four new distinguished experts:

Prof Veronica McKay – A literacy development leader who spearheaded the Kha Ri Gude Literacy Campaign and initiated the DBE Rainbow Workbook project.

Dr Faranaaz VeriavaA legal expert in education rights and former head of the Education Programme at SECTION 27, known for her work in landmark education justice cases.

Ms Kentse Radebe – A social innovation specialist and Deputy CEO of the DG Murray Trust, advancing impactful education and youth development strategies.

Prof Mary Metcalfe – A policy expert and former Gauteng MEC for Education, bringing extensive experience in systemic education reforms.

These new appointments bring a wealth of expertise and innovative thinking to the 2030 Reading Panel.

“Their leadership will bolster our advocacy efforts and help drive meaningful, evidence-based interventions to ensure all 10-year-olds can read for meaning by 2030,” said Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka.

Breast cancer cases in South Africa have doubled in the past 20 years, with many women lacking access to resources for early detection. Aiming to change this, a pioneering Breast Cancer Awareness Program launched by Phithos Technologies, in partnership with the Breast Health Foundation (BHF), offers a free, first-of-its-kind online assessment tool to empower women across the country. This innovative initiative, supported by Novartis, aims to significantly increase early-detection rates and save lives. The groundbreaking health-tech platform (phylaxis.ai) uses medical-science, data-science and personalised education to empower South African women with the knowledge and tools for early- detection of breast cancer.

The Phylaxis.ai platform offers a solution to the challenges of breast cancer awareness and prevention in South Africa. As the first-of-its-kind comprehensive online assessment, it empowers individuals with personalised knowledge, breaking down barriers to care and facilitating early-detection. Unlike traditional awareness campaigns, Phylaxis.ai leverages data-driven approach to provide targeted education and address specific knowledge gaps, ensuring maximum impact. By combining accessibility, affordability, and cutting-edge innovation, this program represents a significant step forward in the fight against breast cancer, empowering women across the country to take control of their health.

“Imagine Phylaxis.ai as a personalized health coach for breast cancer awareness. Just like a coach helps you understand a sport, this online tool helps you understand breast cancer. It asks you a series of questions about your knowledge of breast cancer, and then gives you a personalized report. This report tells you what you know, what you don't know, and gives you information to help you learn more. It's like having a private tutor for breast cancer information, right at your fingertips” says Kabelo Sejaphala, Program Director at Phithos Technologies.

Prof. Carol-Ann Benn, a renowned surgeon, top breast cancer specialist, and the head of The Breast Care Centre of Excellence (BCCE), herself did the assessment and quoted “Absolutely the most amazing thing that Breast Health Foundation has come up with, it is a wonder. The only concern is that I only got 76% and not 100%, which goes to show that we all can learn something about breast health, what we need to check for, and I encourage everyone to use the assessment tool”.

Why This Matters: Early-Detection Saves Lives

According to the National Cancer Registry, breast cancer rates in South Africa have doubled over the last two decades, now accounting for 14-30% of all cancers in women. Early-detection remains one of the most effective strategies to reduce mortality, yet significant disparities in awareness, access to screening, and medical care persist—particularly in underserved communities.

Phylaxis.ai addresses these challenges by providing personalized and easy-to-access educational content. The platform’s assessment tool helps women understand their breast cancer risks, dispels common myths, and guides them on appropriate steps for screening and prevention.

Innovating Healthcare: How Phylaxis.ai Works

Developed by South Africa-based Phithos Technologies, Phylaxis.ai integrates medical-science and technology to deliver prospective and personalized health insights. Here’s what makes it innovative:

Empowering Women, Reducing Healthcare Disparities

The Breast Health Foundation’s collaboration with Phithos Technologies will see the platform rolled out in clinics across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga. Patient navigators will guide women through assessments and provide critical information on breast health.

“This is more than just an awareness campaign—it’s an actionable tool that will help improve breast cancer literacy and screening rates, which are crucial for early-detection and reducing mortality,” said Louise Turner, Chief Operations Officer of the Breast Health Foundation.

The Breast Cancer Awareness assessment is accessible to all South Africans, at no cost, through a web-based application. This democratises healthcare by making life-saving information available to all, regardless of geographic or socioeconomic barriers.

Lovkesh Arora, CEO of Phithos Technologies, emphasized, "Access to contextualized and personalised health information is fundamental to promoting better health at all levels of the socio-ecological hierarchy. We view this as an essential component of quality healthcare services, aligning with the 'Right to Health' principle.

A Paradigm Shift in Preventative Healthcare

As Dr. Bradley Max Segal, Chief Health AI Officer at Phithos Technologies, explains, this initiative has the potential to reshape healthcare: “By leveraging personalized assessments, we're able to deliver targeted educational content that addresses each individual's specific knowledge gaps. This approach has the potential to significantly improve early-detection rates and breast health outcomes while providing insights into overall patterns of awareness to help define high-yield targeted interventions and effective programs & policy updates.”

Call to Action: Join the Movement for Better Breast Health

Women across South Africa are encouraged to complete the assessment, empowering themselves with knowledge that could save their lives

The 10th African Women Writers’ Symposium (AWWS) takes place on 20 October and 26 October, in Soweto and Newtown (Johannesburg) respectively. This two-day programme, which we trust will inspire hope in these dark days in the world, includes workshops, talks, debates, and discussion on literature in our troubled world.

Sunday 20 October 2024 at Soweto Theatre

The talks will be livestreamed.

The Symposium kicks off on Sunday 20th October at the Soweto Theatre with the Nadine Gordimer In Memoriam Lecture presented by Professor Carolyn Cooper from Jamaica. The theme of her address is All My Weapons Within Me: Literature and Popular Culture as Sites of Female Empowerment in Jamaica. It will also explore the phenomenal impact of Caribbean music and culture on the world stage.

Prof Cooper has famously said that “Jamaica is her mother tongue and English her step mother tongue.” She currently writes a weekly column for the Jamaica Gleaner, and translates it into the Jamaican language for her blog http://carolynjoycooper.wordpress.com/

The conversation and Q&A will be facilitated by Cathy Mohlahlana. The event will be in-person as well as online.

The In Memoriam Lecture will be preceded by the launch of Nokwanda Ngombane’s debut book Who do you think you are? Nokwanda Ngombane writes the story about the political assassination of her husband Noby Ngombane in the Free State, and her life thereafter: surviving a corrupt criminal justice system, and a misogynistic society that frames widows as scapegoats for murder. Nomboniso Gasa will be in conversation with the author.

The end of the evening will feature a range of poetry and musical performances.

Note for editors

About Professor Emerita Carolyn Cooper: She is the author of two influential books – Noises in the Blood: Orality, Gender and the ‘Vulgar’ Body of Jamaican Popular Culture (1993); and Sound Clash:  Jamaican Dancehall Culture at Large (2004).  She co-edited with Dr Eleanor Wint, Bob Marley: The Man and His Music (2003). She is the editor of the award-winning collection of essays Global Reggae (2012).  She is currently editing The Bob Marley Lectures, the proceedings of an engaging lecture series on Jamaican popular music, which she initiated in 1997 as Co-ordinator of the Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.

Previous keynote addresses for the Nadine Gordimer In Memoriam Lecture have been delivered by writers from the continent and its diaspora, such as Patricia Smith (USA), Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe), Leila Aboulela (Sudan), Gillian Slovo (SA), and Lorna Goodison (Jamaica), amongst others.

Saturday 26 October 2024 at the Auditorium (Market Photo Workshop, at the Market Square, Newtown) All talks from 12 midday will be livestreamed.

On Saturday 26 October, AWWS will feature various literary international and local panel discussions on contemporary issues as well as master class workshops on poetry, and publishing. Some of the highlights to look out for include a talk led by New York acclaimed hip hop poet and educator Toni Blackman, together with hip hop poet Eavesdrop from Cape Town and Gigi Lamayne, looking into the role and influence of women on urban contemporary music, including hip hop and amapiano.

The symposium also includes a thought-provoking panel called Narrating Palestine. It seeks to meander the traps of disinformation and lies perpetrated by the powerful through mainstream media. Prominent media practitioners will join the panel, including Phathiswa Magopeni (former head of SABC News and currently a board member of the public broadcaster), Qaanitah Hunter (award winning political journalist, editor and media industry leader in South Africa), and Youmna ElSayed. Johannesburg, South Africa – October 2024 - In a significant step towards tackling breast cancer literacy and disparities in South Africa, Phithos Technologies, in partnership with the Breast Health Foundation (BHF), has launched the world’s first-ever comprehensive Breast Cancer Awareness Program using the innovative health-tech platform, Phylaxis.ai. This pioneering initiative, supported by Novartis and recognised by the Alliance and Partnerships for Patient Innovation and Solutions (APPIS) as one of the top three winners of their 2024 Innovator Program, is set to transform breast cancer awareness, screening, and intervention across the country.

Funded by Novartis, APPIS was established in 2021 to address disparities in access to health care across Africa, the Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Under its Innovator Program, APPIS partners with organisations to help scale up innovative patient-focused solutions.

The initiative comes at a critical time as breast cancer cases continue to rise in South Africa, with the National Cancer Registry reporting a doubling of cases from 2000 to 2020. Today, breast cancer accounts for 14-30% of all cancers in women, with significant disparities in screening and treatment access, particularly among marginalized communities.

About the BHF Program

The Breast Health Foundation (BHF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment efforts in South Africa. “The aim of the assessment and the BHF program is to improve women’s knowledge of breast cancer, while also addressing misconceptions and superstitions that stop many women from seeking medical advice and care”, outlines Louise Turner, Chief Operations Officer at BHF.

The BHF will send out the team of patient navigators to clinics across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga, where they will conduct assessments with patients. “But of course, anyone in South Africa can use the assessment, at no cost to them” highlights Turner.

Innovative Technology Driving Early-Detection and Preventative Behaviour

Phithos Technologies, a South Africa-based research and predictive analytics company, developed a health-tech platform, Phylaxis.ai, which uniquely combines medical and data science to promote personalised, prospective, and preventative healthcare for social good. This innovative platform will play a crucial role in driving BHF's mission by providing tailored health insights that promote early detection and intervention, ultimately aiming to reduce the breast cancer burden across South Africa.

Kabelo Sejaphala, Program Director at Phithos Technologies, emphasized the program’s transformative potential: "By leveraging a data-driven approach, we are breaking barriers in healthcare and breast cancer awareness. Our partnership with the Breast Health Foundation ensures that more South African women, particularly in underserved regions, have access to critical early detection and prevention resources that can save lives."

Empowering and Tackling Health Disparities

By providing users with personalised reports, the Phylaxis.ai platform helps women better understand the breast cancer risks and early detection efforts. The technology identifies gaps in knowledge, addresses myths, and provides crucial information about signs, symptoms, and treatment options.

"This innovative program represents a paradigm shift in breast cancer awareness and education. By leveraging personalized assessments, we're able to deliver targeted educational content that addresses each individual's specific knowledge gaps. This approach has the potential to significantly improve early detection rates and overall breast health outcomes while providing insights into overall patterns of awareness to help define high-yield targeted interventions and effective programs & policy updates." added Dr. Bradley Max Segal, Chief Health AI Officer (CHAIO) of Phithos Technologies

"Access to contextualized and personalised health information is fundamental to promoting better health at all levels of the socio-ecological hierarchy. We view this as an essential component of quality healthcare services, aligning with the 'Right to Health' principle. Our commitment to continuous innovation and technological evolution drives us to deliver affordable and high-quality preventative healthcare services, with the ultimate goal of reducing the national disease burden." emphasized Lovkesh Arora, CEO of Phithos Technologies

Johannesburg, South Africa – September 9, 2024Darkies in Tech (DIT), a registered non-profit organisation, is excited to announce the launch of its new website, a milestone in its mission to develop and transform the South African startup ecosystem by unifying and supporting professionals of colour (POC) within the space. The website aims to provide a centralised platform for POC to connect, learn, and grow within the tech industry.

Darkies in Tech is dedicated to creating a future where professionals of colour have equitable access to knowledge, networks, and funding within the South African tech ecosystem. With a membership base of 450 POC founders, investors, and ecosystem builders, DIT is the largest vetted community of its kind in South Africa. The organisation's vision is to contribute significantly to a diverse and inclusive tech industry that reflects South Africa's rich demographic diversity.

Target Audience

DIT primarily serves South African POC tech founders and builders, but also supports POC investors and ecosystem builders who face similar challenges in navigating the local tech startup ecosystem. The organisation is sector-agnostic, welcoming eligible applicants who demonstrate commitment to their startup or scale-up ventures.

Impact and Achievements

Since its inception, Darkies in Tech has had a profound impact on the South African tech community. Collectively, DIT founders have created over 3,200 jobs and raised R5.9 billion in venture capital. The community also includes 23 major investment firms and funds represented at senior levels, making DIT the most impactful network for POC in the country. Events hosted by DIT have featured prominent guest speakers, such as Lyinoluwa Aboyeji, founder of two African unicorn companies, and Tesh Mbaabu, founder of Marketforce 360 & Chpter. Collaborations among DIT members have generated tens of millions of rands in value through investments, partnerships, and mentorships.

The launch of the DIT website marks a significant step forward in reducing barriers to entry for POC within the local tech ecosystem. The website will serve as a central hub where potential members can learn about the organisation and apply to join the community. The website’s main objective is to make it easier for POC to discover and connect with the community, thus supporting the broader mission of fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.

Darkies in Tech provides a range of networking opportunities, including regular online and in-person events where members can exchange high-quality information and build valuable connections. All community members are admitted into an online community hosted on WhatsApp, with role-based and interest-based groups such as ‘Founders Only,’ ‘Women Only,’ ‘AI Fanatics,’ and more.

"The launch of our website marks a pivotal moment in our journey to create an inclusive and thriving tech ecosystem for professionals of colour in South Africa. This platform not only provides easier access to our community but also strengthens our mission to empower POC founders, investors, and ecosystem builders. We're excited to see the impact this will have in opening doors, creating opportunities, and fostering collaborations within the tech space." Says Founder of the DIT, Ntsako Mgiba

As Darkies in Tech continues to grow, the organisation is preparing to launch member programs in 2025 that will include benefits like software perks and exclusive dinners with investors. The DIT team is also exploring new partnerships to further enhance the support offered to its members.

The South African tech ecosystem presents significant challenges for POC, who often find themselves outside the trusted networks where knowledge, capital, and opportunities are freely circulated. Darkies in Tech addresses these challenges by creating a supportive community that empowers black tech founders and investors to succeed without constantly having to seek permission from the predominantly white tech ecosystem.

In a world where belief in possibility fuels the future, we are proud to announce the upcoming Sounds of Celebration concert, themed Believe. Set to take place on the 10th of September, at the WITS Linder Auditorium, this hybrid concert brings together exceptional musical talent from across South Africa’s four provinces, celebrating the power of music to unite, inspire, and transcend boundaries. This celebration concert was made possible by a grant from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC). We’re proud to announce that featured performers include:

Also performing will be students from Education Africa’s Marimba Hubs, which operate in underserved communities. These hubs provide access to music education, using a unique teaching method developed by Joan Lithgow, Marimba Specialist at Education Africa. The program equips schools with marimbas and drums, empowering educators and learners alike with the tools to excel in ensemble music. Through a combination of intensive training and ongoing support for educators, these hubs have become a vibrant part of community life.

The Sounds of Celebration concert is not just about music—it’s a testament to the resilience and capabilities of our special-needs Hubs, who will also perform, showcasing their exceptional talents. Their participation underlines the concert’s core belief that anything is possible when we nurture resilience and embrace each other’s differences. It’s also a call for social cohesion, a testament to the unifying force of ensemble music, and an affirmation that a better future is possible when we all believe in each other. Music from these performers will break barriers, showing that through resilience, inclusivity, and determination, we can achieve a world where everyone’s potential is realised.

Tickets: R100. Available on TicketPro HERE.

Come join us in celebrating belief, resilience, and unity through the universal language of music.
