Johannesburg, South Africa - September 4, 2023 - The National School of the Arts (NSA) proudly announces the return of esteemed alumnus Thami Tshabalala to its hallowed halls. Tshabalala, a renowned choreographer, dancer, and activist, is set to impress audiences with his commissioned work, "ON YOUR MARK, READY, SET … SEE ME," as part of the NSA's Dance Spectrum production, "September Suite."

Memories were stirred when Tshabalala walked into the NSA to begin preparations for Dance Spectrum, the annual showcase production for the Dance Department that takes place from September 14th to September 17th at the Lesedi at Joburg Theatre. Tshabalala, who matriculated from the NSA in 2009 and later graduated cum laude from the Tshwane University of Technology, expressed his anticipation for this emotional return. "I have looked forward to this moment for many years now," said Tshabalala, who has graced stages locally and internationally. "It is such a privilege to return to the NSA's familiar studios and give back to a school that was instrumental in guiding my creative journey. One cannot over-emphasize how the NSA provided and continues to provide a safe and nurturing creative space for talented youth."

Tshabalala's commissioned work, "ON YOUR MARK, READY, SET … SEE ME," explores the liberation movement initiated by Gen Z as they seek identity, inclusivity, and representation in a constantly shifting world. Commenting on the piece, Tshabalala remarked, "The work depicts revolutionized culture at the brim of a breakthrough. Our youth will fly if pushed. The NSA dancers are passionate and expressive. They are committed to the process and are willing and ready to tell vital stories through dance."

"September Suite" serves as a showcase for the diverse dance styles taught at the NSA, ranging from neo-classical ballet to contemporary dance, Afro-Fusion, and Spanish dance. This production will transport audiences into a world where movement, music, and creativity collide, allowing the stars of tomorrow to earn their well-deserved spotlight.

In addition to Thami Tshabalala, the performance will feature choreography by educators Laura Cameron (Contemporary) and Gillian Bonegio (Spanish), as well as Mark Hawkins, the season's director. Lighting designer Wilhelm Disbergen will add his magic touch to elevate the visual artistry of the performance.

Mark Hawkins, the season's director, expressed his excitement, saying, "Nurturing young artists to fly is an absolute privilege."

This year, "September Suite" also highlights emerging choreographic talents within the NSA community, including Grade 11 students Chidera Nwoha and Creagan Martins, alongside Grade 12's Hatoentle Tema and Jaymé Golding. Golding's piece, "Follow the Light," promises an emotional farewell to the matric dance class of 2023.

The Lesedi at Joburg Theatre, renowned for hosting iconic performances, provides the perfect backdrop for "September Suite." Audiences are invited to witness the talent, heart, and passion of the National School of the Arts from September 14th to 17th, 2023.
