A Yoga Day like No Other: South Africa to Showcase One of Africa's Largest Celebrations

Johannesburg, (1 June 2023) – The Consulate General of India, Johannesburg, is delighted to announce the upcoming celebration of the International Day of Yoga at Wanderers Stadium on Saturday, 24 June 2023. This momentous event marks the Consul General's inaugural initiative in South Africa and is set to become one of the biggest Yoga gatherings in the world.

In recognition of the global significance of Yoga, as declared by the United Nations, South Africa is poised to host one of the most remarkable Yoga Day events to date. This inaugural event will showcase the country's dedication to fostering a multi-cultural environment and promoting holistic well-being among its citizens.

On International Day of Yoga, people from all walks of life and different parts of the world come together to celebrate the ancient practice of yoga. Under the esteemed patronage of the Consulate General of India, and in association with various socio-cultural associations, Yoga schools and institutions, this grand-scale event in South Africa is expected to draw over 5000 participants, making it the largest Yoga Day gathering in Africa.

This occasion will bring individuals, families, and communities together to engage in yoga sessions, workshops, demonstrations, and discussions. It is a day dedicated to promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, and stress reduction through the practice of yoga.

World Yoga Day has gained tremendous popularity worldwide, with millions of people actively participating in yoga events organized in public spaces, parks, schools, community centers, and yoga studios. It serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga and its potential to contribute to individual well-being and global harmony.

Mr. Mahesh Kumar, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Johannesburg expressed his excitement for this significant event, stating, "We are thrilled to bring the International Day of Yoga to South Africa on such a grand scale. This event serves as a platform for people from diverse backgrounds to come together and experience the transformative power of Yoga. Through this inaugural event, we aim to create an inclusive and culturally enriching environment that celebrates the essence of unity and well-being."

Highlights of the International Day of Yoga event include:

Yoga Session: Engage in invigorating Yoga sessions guided by accomplished instructors suitable for participants of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Participants to the event will be provided a complimentary Yoga kit (Yoga t-shirt, mat etc). The Yoga session will be followed by a master class on Bollywood Dance where participants can learn the basics and nuances of the dance form.

Cultural Exhibitions: Immerse yourself in a rich cultural experience with stalls showcasing traditional Indian handicrafts, decor, and cultural artifacts, providing a glimpse into the profound connections between Yoga and Indian heritage.

Family-Friendly Activities: Enjoy a variety of activities designed for families, including a dedicated play area for children, interactive health stalls, diverse food options, and exciting prize giveaways for the best Yoga poses and more.

The International Day of Yoga celebration will take place on Saturday, 24 June 2023, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Wanderers Cricket Stadium, Corlett Dr, Illovo, Sandton, 2196.
