Mandela Institute For Development Studies (MINDS) Inaugural Scholarship Leadership Development Programme

Date: 31 Jul 2019

MINDS is hosting its inaugural scholarship leadership development training from 05 – 09 August at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The scholarship programme was launched in 2017 as part of MINDS commitment to Africa’s development by providing opportunities for African youth to pursue post-graduate study within Africa, but always outside their own country. This provides the scholars an opportunity to establish networks with young people in other countries.

The scholarship programme is designed to produce future African leaders who are knowledgeable and comfortable with the continent beyond their national boundaries, and develop leaders with a continental development mindset. It is our belief that the development of the continent can only be achieved through greater cooperation between African countries. It is hoped that this outlook will make it easier for MINDS scholars to work together to create a more cohesive continent for the benefit of all its people.

The scholarship programme is collaborating with credible universities across the continent. To date, MINDS has awarded scholarships to eleven  scholars, seven of who have since graduated. The scholarship is currently supported by the Diamond Empowerment Fund, Mastercard Foundation, Nedbank’s Eyethu Trust, Old Mutual Emerging Markets, as well as the Government of Rwanda.

The leadership training programme is designed to equip young African scholars as agents for social cohesion and economic integration in addressing the continent’s development challenges. The themes to be addressed in leadership programme include economic integration, pan –Africanism, youth engagement in governance processes, leadership skills training, and nation building and driving societal change.
